How to make DIY Peppermint Candy Spoons

  1. Crush The Candy: Crush the peppermints into small pieces.
  2. Melt In The Mold: Fill each spoon mold with crushed peppermints. Place in a 300 degree Fahrenheit oven and melt completely.
    Pro Tip: Be sure to add extra candy at the neck of the spoon (where the spoon and handle meet). These are areas that break most easily.
  3. Separate Your Spoons: Separate the molds from the candy carefully and remove. If one breaks, just add some more crushed peppermint and cook for a few minutes more.
  4. Dip And Decorate: Melt the chocolate and dip each spoon in the melted chocolate and cover with holiday sprinkles.
  5. Serve: Allow the spoons to dry and start stirring! Enjoy!

Tips For Making DIY Peppermint Candy Spoons

  • You do need a silicone spoon mold to make these treats. Mine says it is for microwaving chocolate, but I used it in my oven over and over – no problem!
  • After removing the spoons from the mold, use a new, clean fingernail file to make the edges smooth and gently file away the uneven edges. Be careful not to push too hard so as not to break the spoon.
  • One full bag of mints from Target makes two full spoon molds.
  • A whole bag of chocolate candy melts was way more than sufficient. Probably half a bag would work, but make sure you melt them in a deep bowl so you can dip the spoon to the depth needed.

You will need the following to make these into a quick and easy gift:

To fill the treat bag:

  1. Stand the treat bag in a glass.
  2. Add a spoonful of chocolate mix inside.
  3. Gently push the spoon down into the hot chocolate mix.
    Pro Tip: Remember to face the pretty part of the spoon to the front of the bag.
  4. Either using a spoon or a spoon and small funnel, add more chocolate mix into the bag behind the spoon.
  5. Add the marshmallows and tie.

  • To Store: Once cooled, candy spoons can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for a few months.

How do I crush the peppermint candy?

You can crush the peppermint candies in a resealable ziploc bag using a kitchen mallet or a rolling pin. You can also pulse them in a blender or food processor, as long as you stop before they turn to dust. 

How long does it take to melt the crushed candy?

My candy took about 10 minutes to melt, but every oven is different and you just have to watch it. Once it was mostly melted (about 8 minutes in or so) I took my molds out and added some additional crushed peppermint wherever it looked thin (the peppermint will melt down a bunch, so you may have to fill it in). Then I let it cook for a few minutes longer.

What should I do with broken spoons?

I like to save the broken spoons and toss them in my coffee with a squirt of chocolate syrup. This way I can have my own version of Peppermint Mocha coffee instead of buying one at Starbucks!

How can I prevent the sprinkles from clumping together?

Instead of dipping the chocolate-coated spoons directly into the candy sprinkles, you can hold the spoon over the sprinkle bowl and use a separate spoon to sprinkle them onto the melted chocolate. Dipping the chocolate spoon into the sprinkles can make the candy sprinkles clump together with some of the melted chocolate that inevitably dripped off into the bowl of sprinkles.

  1. I tried this twice and both failed. Also tried the peppermint platter and not all the pepppermint melted. First batch pieces were too large so used food proccessor the second time. The damn stuff wouldn’t melt in both batches. I’m glad i didn’t pay full price for this mold. Next year i’ll just buy them already made for my own sanity. Why is it when someone else makes it their’s comes out great and mine fail?

    1. Hi – not sure why they weren’t melting for you. It may be the actual mints you used. If you decide to try them again, try the starlight peppermints from Target – the Market Pantry brand. I have never failed with these.

  2. This is a great idea. I’ve made two batches and on one side the spoon is nice and smooth. The other side of spoon is all bubbly. Any suggestions?

  3. This is such an amazing idea! I think these cute little spoons will make some adorable stocking stuffers this year :). I’m just sorry I didn’t come across this last year already. I’ve made three batches and have learned a few lessons:
    Crushed candy cane will work fine if the spoon comes out of the mold when it’s still a bit warm. Otherwise, all the spoons will break.
    Don’t run your finger down the back side of the spoon to see if it’s sharp. I literally sliced my finger open :(.
    To make the back a bit more smooth, use the back of a spoon and quickly run it alongside the side of each spoon to smooth out some of the pointy candy bits.

  4. I have kind of a dumb question…. Can you melt the candy and then pour in the mold? Then maybe sprinkle some little chunks on top?

  5. Wow they look great! I just have one question, do they have an expayer date? Or putting it in another way, if I make them now, can you still eat them the 24 December? And should they be kept cold? ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. I think you wouldn’t want to make them more than a week in advance. They will still work and be fine, they don’t really expire, but I would make them as close to use as possible.

  6. I will definitely be using this recipe this year, but also would like to make chocolate ones. Do you have a good recipe for chocolate spoons? I can’t seem to find one anywhere on pinterest or google.

    1. Chocolate is super easy to make. Just melt the chocolate (you can use candy melts or chocolate chips even) and pour them in the mold. Then let them set. You can even put them in the refrigerator for a few minutes to set faster!

  7. I bought some of the disposable decorating bags but they don’t seem really clear to me. The are kind of “film”. Are they all like that or do I need to buy them from a special place?
