Eggroll in a Bowl Recipe Ingredients
The ingredients needed for egg roll in a bowl are primarily seasonings and oil, with a few vegetables and your choice of protein. You might have many of these items already in the pantry at home.
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef
- 1 large onion diced finely
- 1 16-ounce bag coleslaw mix
- ½ cup carrots peeled and finely shredded
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp red pepper flakes
- 1 ½ tsp ground ginger
- 1 tbsp minced garlic
- ½ – ¾ cup soy sauce
- 2 tbsp sesame oil
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
Substitutions or Additions
- Meat: I suggest using ground beef here, but you could easily swap it out for another type of meat. If you prefer pork, chicken, or turkey, you could use a ground version of any of those.
- Vegetarian: You could also opt for a vegetarian-style egg roll bowl and or use tofu, meatless crumbles, or grilled shrimp in its place, or leave the meat out altogether.
- Soy Sauce – You can substitute low sodium soy sauce if you find regular soy sauce too salty. Use 1/2 cup of low sodium soy sauce and add more as needed.
- Additions: There are so many ingredients you could add to make this egg roll bowl your own! You can change the oils and seasonings you are using, add in extra veggies, or get creative with your sides.
- I love to add rice to this recipe to really complete it and make it a bit more filling when serving it as a meal.

Egg Roll Bowl Recipe Tips
If you find regular soy sauce too salty, substitute low sodium soy sauce.
I used just over a ½ cup of low sodium soy sauce in the recipe, and it was perfect. There was plenty of “juice” in the skillet; it was not too dry and it was not too salty.
I put the additional ¼ cup (recipe called for ½ to ¾ cup of soy sauce) of low sodium soy sauce on the table to be added if needed.

Egg Roll in a Bowl Recipe
Ingredients
- 1½ pounds ground beef
- 1 large onion diced finely
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 2 tablespoons sesame oil
- ½ cup carrots peeled and finely shredded
- 16 ounces coleslaw mix
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1½ teaspoon ground ginger
- ½ – ¾ cup low sodium soy sauce I used about ½ cup
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- green onions for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Cook ground beef in a large deep-sided skillet over medium heat until no longer pink. Be careful to not break the ground beef into smaller pieces, keep the pieces larger.
- Drain grease and return to the stovetop. Add the onions and minced garlic and cook until the onions are soft and translucent. Again, keep the ground beef in larger pieces.
- Add 2 tablespoons sesame oil, carrots, and coleslaw mix to the skillet. Use tongs to combine. Let cook for about 5 minutes.
- In a small separate bowl combine the onion powder, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, ground ginger, soy sauce, and vegetable oil. Pour over meat and coleslaw mixture.
- Reduce the heat and continue to cook for about 5 minutes.
Jenn’s Notes
- Keep your pan a bit cooler to not burn the garlic. You can always turn it up higher if needed, but burnt garlic will add a sour flavor to your recipe.
- Check your supermarket for pre-shredded carrots to save yourself some time.
- You can bring out the flavor of the spices by rubbing them together in your palms before adding them to the pan. You can also use a mortar and pestle.

This was a very tasty and simple recipe. I made it as the recipe states except I only had regular soy sauce on hand. I would definitely use the low sodium next time. Excellent, simple weekday dinner.
Great recipe, I substituted the vegetable oil for olive oil and the soy sauce for Coconut Liquid Aminos.
Wow so delicious thanks Jenn❤️
So great. Easy to do. I’ve made these before but didn’t follow the directions to coat and batter the cauliflower. I’m so glad I did this time. It was a game changer.
oops wrong recipe I made this one today too though. I was making meals ahead and thought this was the cauliflower wings recipe. But anyway I have used this recipe 3 times now. It is great. I do however use less ginger and red pepper flakes.
