If you’ve never tried a dump cake, then allow me to change your life. Although they might be lacking in the name department, dump cakes more than make up for it in their simplicity and deliciousness.

The name “dump cake” comes from the fact that you quite literally dump all of the ingredients together and bake your dessert. Yep, it’s really that easy!
Beyond how simple they are to make, the beauty of dump cakes is in their versatility.
This chocolate cherry cake recipe is one of my absolute favorites, but you could definitely switch it up. You can change your fruit filling, the cake flavor, or both! So, really this recipe is many recipes all in one!
We’ve made dump cakes using a yellow cake mix with the cherry filling, or a yellow cake mix with apple filling, or a blueberry filling. The sky’s the limit!
You can custom make this to your liking. Some other possible fruit fillings include peach, blueberry, apple, pineapple, strawberry, and so many more!

Some people call this a Black Forest Dump Cake. Black Forest is usually a chocolate and cherry combination and it is beyond delicious!
I love the tart sweetness of the cherry filling with the rich smoothness of a dark chocolate cake mix. I am a chocolate lover after all.
Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake Ingredients
Even the ingredients list for this recipe is easy peasy. Only 3 ingredients are needed to put this all together.
- 1 box of chocolate cake mix (I like to use something rich like Devil’s Food!)
- 2 (21 oz) cans of cherry pie filling
- 1 cup of melted butter (2 sticks)
How to Make Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake:
Have I mentioned that this is such an easy recipe? The name “dump cake” should be a dead giveaway that basically you are just going to dump all of the ingredients together!
PREPARE
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray a 13×9 inch cake pan with non-stick spray.
DUMP
Pour both cans of cherry pie filling along the bottom baking dish. Sprinkle the dry cake mix on top of the cherry pie filling. Pour melted butter over whole dish.
PRO TIP: Do your best to drizzle the cake evenly, it may not cover the entire cake and that is ok!
BAKE
Bake your dump cake for about 50-60 minutes, until the fruit is bubbly and the cake is cooked all the way through.
Serve warm – I like to serve it fresh out of the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream melted on top and of course whipped cream!
How to Make a Dump Cake in the Crock Pot
Want to make an easy dump cake recipe even easier? This can also be made in the crock pot.
To do so, you will follow the instructions below and instead of pouring all of the ingredients into a pan, you will pour them into the crockpot.
Then, simply cook on low for about 2 hours, the easiest recipe ever, gets even easier!
PRO TIP:
Use non-stick spray or line the crockpot with a crock pot liner. You’ll be pouring all of the ingredients straight into the crock pot! No need to mix them up beforehand.
I love making this recipe in the crock pot when I will be bringing it to a gathering or holiday get together! That way, I can just plug it in and keep it warm when I arrive at the party.
How to Store Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake:
In my opinion, this is one dessert that is much better served warm and fresh! But, if you have leftovers it is very easy to store in an airtight container in the fridge, and to heat up when you want a little snack!
