Home Fries In The Air Fryer

Our crispy Air Fryer Home Fries make a hearty, healthy savory side that’s perfect for serving for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

I’ll show you how to make Air Fryer Home Fries that are not only tasty but also healthier than frying them in oil.

I love air frying my produce when I want to cut calories and fat (compared to their deep fried home fries counterpart); these potatoes cook soft and fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside.

Crispy home fries air fryer recipes are so quick and simple since there’s no boiling, microwaving or soaking potatoes first; just cut them into cubes, toss with a little oil, sprinkle with seasoning, and cook into the classic American food we call fries.

Why We Love Air Fryer Home Fries

  • Quick and easy to make.
  • Only uses 5 ingredients.
  • Air fried home fries are a healthier alternative to traditional deep frying or pan frying.
  • What’s not to love about making American fries with much less oil.
  • You can customize the seasonings to suit your tastes.
  • Perfect dish to serve with breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner main meals.
Air Fryer Home Fries ingredients

Ingredients for Air Fryer Home Fries

  • Russet potatoes
  • Red bell pepper: You can substitute any color bell pepper if you prefer.
  • Shallot: You can substitute a small onion, half of a medium onion, or simply use onion powder instead.
  • Avocado oil, olive oil, or your favorite cooking oil
  • Garlic Parmesan Wing Seasoning Mix: I used the Great Value brand of this seasoning.
  • Fresh parsley (optional garnish)

Substitutions and Additions

  • Pick Your Potato: You can substitute red or Yukon gold potatoes if necessary, although russet potatoes are best for air fryer breakfast home fries.
  • Swap The Seasoning: Feel free to use your favorite meat or veggie seasoning pack, like Cajun, taco, or ranch. You can also make up your own seasoning with salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, Italian spices, or Old Bay seasoning.
  • Flavor With Fresh Herbs: Sprinkle some fresh herbs on the home fries, such as parsley, rosemary, or cilantro.
  • Grab A Garnish: You can garnish the home fries with cheese, salsa, and sour cream for a Mexican-flavored dish.

How to Make Air Fryer Home Fries

  1. Prepare The Potatoes: Stir together the potatoes, bell pepper, shallot and avocado oil, sprinkle in the seasoning, and toss to coat.
  2. Cook: Place the potato mixture in a single layer in the air fryer basket and cook for for 15-18 minutes at 390 degrees Fahrenheit.
Pro Tip: You should shake or flip the potatoes halfway through.
  3. Serve: Serve warm with optional garnish. Enjoy!

Tips For Air Fryer Home Fries

  • Feel free to use your favorite cooking oil. I like Avocado oil because the high smoke point means it won’t burn when it gets hot.
  • Cut your potatoes as uniformly as possible for even cooking. I cut mine into 1-inch cubes.
  • You may need to cook your home fries in 2 or more batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
  • Don’t overcrowd your air fryer!

What To Serve With Air Fryer Home Fries

These Home Fries are a great breakfast dish, especially when topped with a sunny side-up egg or egg bites and served with some oven-baked bacon or slow cooker Italian sausage on the side. They’re delicious when paired with a Homemade Egg McMuffin, Breakfast Burritos, or added to a Sheet Pan Breakfast.

If you want to make them into a heartier meal you can serve them with gravy a Salisbury Steak. Just because these Air Fryer Home Fries make a great breakfast dish, doesn’t mean you can’t serve them for lunch or dinner as well!

Like all potatoes they are a great complement to sandwiches, proteins, or even a nice snack all by themselves.

Do I Have To Soak Potatoes?

While many home fry recipes require soaking the potatoes before cooking them, it is not necessary. Soaking the potatoes removes any excess starch, prevents pieces from sticking together, and helps them stay crispy longer.

If you are planning to eat your air-fried potatoes right away, the soaking process won’t make a difference. But if you are preparing them in advance, you may want to soak them in cold water.

If you choose to soak your potatoes, make sure to drain them well and blot them with paper towels. Otherwise, you may end up with steamed home fries instead of crispy fries.

How to Store Leftover home fries

  • To Store: Allow the air fryer home fries to cool completely before storing. They should be stored in an airtight container or bag in the refrigerator for 5-6 days.
  • To Freeze: Store the home fries in a freezer-safe container in the freezer for 2-3 months.
  • To Reheat: I recommend reheating these home fries in the air fryer until heated through, though you can also reheat them in the microwave if you prefer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my food not crispy in the air fryer?

If the air is not hot enough, or if you overcrowd the basket, your food will not come out crispy. Preheat the air fryer for at least 3 minutes, and work in batches if you need to

Are home fries the same as French fries?

While both home fries and french fries are made from potatoes, they vary in shape and size. Home fries are made from cubed or diced potatoes and often are cooked with peppers and onions. French fries are elongated pieces of potatoes.

  1. I have a Pampered Chef air-fryer, so it has trays not a basket. It does have a tumbler, would these work in the tumbler or best to do in single layer on the trays?
