Pro-Tips for Making Campfire Apple Crisp

  • For this dessert I would recommend using heavy duty aluminum foil to safely hold all of the ingredients. But you can absolutely make your apple crisp in regular foil by doubling up the pieces.
  • If you do not have a grill or fire pit, you can use your oven. You can bake the apple crisp foil packets on a baking sheet at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • You can slice the apples the night before. Toss the uncoated apple slices in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or cooler until you are ready to assemble the packets.
  • Any leftover packets can be eaten as breakfast the next morning. (It’s vacation! Enjoy!)
  • Always keep an eye on the placement of the foil packets. Try to place the packets around the edges of the grill/campfire, as temperature on a grill or fire pit can fluctuate.

Storage Tips

  • To Store: Store any leftovers either in the foil packets or an airtight container in a refrigerator or cooler overnight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What apples are best for making this apple crisp?

The best apples for making this apple crisp will be your hard, crispy, tart apples. The crunchy, crisp apples will stand up better to the heat of the grill and they won’t turn into applesauce like the softer apple can. Some of my favorites include Granny Smith, Braeburn, Cortland, Honeycrisp, and MacIntosh.

Can I prepare these apple crisp foil packs in advance?

I love this dessert because it’s so easy to prepare in advance. If you plan to take them on your next camping trip, simply wrap the apple crisps in foil packs and put them in a freezer bag. When you’re ready to camp, take the assembled packs with you and store them in either the fridge or cooler until ready to make.

What toppings should I use on my apple crisp?

I highly recommend topping these apple crisps with caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream, or cool whip – it makes an already delicious dessert even more divine! You could also sprinkle some cinnamon sugar or chocolate chips on top.

What are foil packet desserts?

Foil packet desserts (or meals) are made using a simple and easy, fuss-free cooking method that allows you to place all the ingredients in an aluminum foil packet and cook your food over a campfire or on a bbq grill. The clean-up could not be easier–just toss the entire packet in the trash when you are finished eating!
