Campfire Apple Crisp are full of sweet juicy apples, warming spices, and an oatmeal topping that are perfect for making on the grill, over the campfire, or baked in the oven all wrapped up in an easy clean-up foil packet.
6cupsapples (5 apples any variety)peeled, cored and thinly sliced
3tbsplight brown sugarpacked
1tbspgranulated sugar
2tspapple pie spice
Topping
1¼cupall-purpose flour
¾cuplight brown sugarpacked
¾cupquick oats
½cup(1 stick) salted sweet cream buttermelted
½tspapple pie spice
Vanilla ice cream (optional topping)
Caramel sundae topping (optional topping)
Instructions
Preheat your grill to 350 degrees (if you can pre-set the temp on your grill. If not, just be sure to keep an eye the packets as they cook). If you are using a fire pit you will need at least 2 - 3 inches of nice hot coals to set the packets over. (It’s also important that your fire pit has a grate to place over the coals)
Using a large mixing bowl, toss together the thinly sliced apple, brown sugar, granulated sugar and apple pie spice. Set it aside.
Using a medium size mixing bowl, stir together the flour, brown sugar, quick oats, apple pie spice, and melted butter. Set it aside.
Tear 6 - 10x18 sections of heavy duty aluminum foil.
Scoop 1 cup of the apple filling onto the middle of the foil.
Scoop out ½ cup of the topping on top of the apple filling.
Fold the long sides of the foil packets together, then fold the ends toward the middle.
If you are using a grill, place the packets around the edges of the grill. If you are using a campfire, place the packets on the grate over the fire pit. Allow the cook for 20 minutes. Remove the packets and allow them to rest for 5 - 10 minutes. Always be very careful when opening the foil packets. Top the apple crisp with vanilla ice cream and drizzle the caramel sundae topping.
Notes
Storage:Store any leftovers either in the foil packets or an airtight container in a refrigerator or cooler overnight.Tips:
For this dessert I would recommend using heavy duty aluminum foil to safely hold all of the ingredients. But you can absolutely make your apple crisp in regular foil by doubling up the pieces.
If you do not have a grill or fire pit, you can use your oven. You can bake the apple crisp foil packets on a baking sheet at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes.
Seal the packet well to trap steam. Fold the packets to close them, like a package. That way you will seal in all the steam and flavor.
You can slice the apples the night before. Toss the uncoated apple slices in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or cooler until you are ready to assemble the packets.
Any leftover packets can be eaten as breakfast the next morning. (It’s vacation! Enjoy!)
Always keep an eye on the placement of the foil packets. Try to place the packets around the edges of the grill/campfire, as temperature on a grill or fire pit can fluctuate.
