Puppy Chow was a staple snack when I was a kid, and it’s so much fun to see that my kids love it just as much as I did. This recipe is so easy to make that I’ve actually pawned it off on my kiddos to make for themselves. 

They have so much fun getting in the kitchen to make this beloved treat. And the reward of a job well done is oh so sweet when you have this delicious crunchy, chocolate, peanut butter snack to enjoy in the coming days. Now if I could just get them to clean the kitchen while they are at it…

Puppy Chow Ingredients

  • Rice Chex -You can use Crispix cereal in place of the Rice Chex. You can also use rice and corn Chex for the mixture, or just corn Chex if you prefer.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips -Milk chocolate can be substituted for semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  • Creamy peanut butter
  • Salted sweet cream butter
  • Powdered sugar

  • FUNFETTI PUPPY CHOW: You’ve probably seen all the crazy flavors of puppy chow that they sell in the stores now. Funfetti Puppy Chow is super easy and delicious. Simply swap out the powdered sugar for funfetti cake mix, and use white chocolate chips in place of the semi-sweet chocolate chips.

How to make Puppy Chow

This has to be one of the easiest recipes ever. The prep will only take about 10 minutes and in just 30 minutes it’s ready to devour.

  1. Add 10 cups of rice Chex to a large mixing bowl.

  2. Microwave butter, peanut butter, and chocolate chips until smooth.

  3. Pour the melted mixture over the Rice Chex and stir until they are all well coated.

  4. Place coated Chex and powdered sugar into a 2-gallon Ziploc bag.

  5. Shake to coat

  6. Pour Chex onto a baking sheet and allow it to rest for 20 minutes.

Muddy Buddies Puppy Chow Tips

  • To Store: Store any leftovers in an airtight container or Ziploc baggie for up to 5 days.
  • Can you freeze Puppy Chow? You can freeze puppy chow for up to 3 months. Just make sure your Ziploc bag is tightly sealed and pop it in the freezer. Simply place it on the countertop to thaw.

Best Puppy Chow Recipe

This classic homemade puppy chow recipe will have you going back for seconds, and thirds. The crunchy powdered sugar, chocolate, and peanut butter snack is simply irresistible!

Rest Time 20 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients
  

  • 10 cups rice chex or generic version
  • cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ¾ cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 tbsp salted sweet cream butter softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions
 

  • Using an extra large mixing bowl, add in the 10 cups of rice chex. Set it aside.
  • Using a medium size heat safe mixing bowl, add the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter. Microwave for 45 seconds. Stir and continue heating in 20 second intervals, stirring after each interval until the mixture is smooth.
  • Pour the chocolate mixture over the rice chex. Stir until all of the chex are completely coated.
  • Pour the coated chex and the powdered sugar into a 2 gallon ziploc baggie. Shake to completely coat the puppy chow.
  • Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Divide the puppy chow between the puppy chow between the 2 baking sheets. Allow the puppy chow to rest for 20 minutes.
