Crock Pot Chex Mix Recipe

Growing up, homemade chex mix was something my mom always made. Usually, she would make it for family vacations. It was a great snack to have around for a road trip or a day at the beach. Because of that, chex mix has a bit of a nostalgic feeling for me and I knew I wanted to make it for my kids, too!

My mom would always make her chex mix in the oven, but I began making mine in the slow cooker and I’ve never looked back!

It makes it much easier to make a really big batch, and as a bonus, I don’t have to have my oven running for hours to get it done. (plus, I just love any recipe that I can make in my slow cooker!)

Not to mention, if you’re preparing for a big party, chances are you’ve got some other things to bake as well. Making your chex mix in the slow cooker frees up your oven for something else!

It’s also super easy to leave this mix unattended while you’re working on other things without worrying that it’ll burn or get soggy.

No matter the occasion that you plan to make your chex mix for, you and all those who get to munch on it are going to enjoy it. Everyone loves Chex Mix and there is just something about the homemade version that makes it that much better than anything you’d buy at the store.

I hope that you’ll enjoy this recipe! It’s one of my all-time favorite snacks.

Slow Cooker Chex Mix Ingredients

Although this recipe is relatively easy, it does tend to require a special trip to the store. I don’t always have all of the cereals on hand, and if I do I have to make sure that they haven’t gone stale since the last time I made my chex mix! Below are the ingredients that I use in my slow cooker Chex mix!

  • 4 cups of rice Chex
  • 3 cups of corn Chex
  • 2 cups of wheat Chex
  • 2 cups of pretzels (classic pretzels or pretzels sticks will be fine!)
  • 2 cups of bagel chips
  • 1 cup of Bugels
  • 1 cup of peanuts
  • 10 tablespoons of butter (melted)
  • 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 ½ teaspoons of seasoned salt
  • 1 ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder

Note: These are the ingredients I always use to make a more traditional style of Chex party mix. The fun part about making any kind of party mix is that you can take out or add in things as you please!

I’ve seen people use cashews instead of peanuts or throw in Cheese-Its or other crackers. This is totally up to you!

This recipe is totally customizable! Add in or leave out anything you don’t like! Pour mixture over chex mix in the slow cooker

How to Make Chex Mix in the Crock-Pot

STEP 1
In a large slow cooker (6 quart or bigger, oval gives more cooking space) place the three boxes of cereal, pretzels, bagel chips, bugles, and peanuts. Use two wooden spoons to gently mix together.

STEP 2
Place the melted butter in a small bowl and add the Worcestershire sauce and spices and stir it together well, until mixed completely.

Pour some of the butter mixture over the cereal mixture and mix with two spoons. Keep pouring the butter mixture over in small amounts and mixing until all the butter mixture is gone.

STEP 3
With the slow cooker on low, cook for three hours. For the first two hours, stir the mixture every 25-30 minutes. The last hour, stir the mix every 15-20 minutes to prevent burning.

PRO TIP: Place some paper towels under the lid while cooking to absorb any extra moisture. Wipe moisture off the lid each time you stir!

STEP 4
Spread the cereal mixture in a single layer onto an ungreased baking sheet or parchment paper to cool for about 20 minutes before serving.

Tips for Making Slow Cooker Chex Party Mix

  • It’s great to use the slow cooker to make this during the summer because you don’t have to heat the house up by using the oven.
  • When stirring the mixture, be sure to do so gently. You don’t want to break up the cereal!
  • You want to avoid your Chex mix getting soggy on you! So, if you find that there is too much condensation taking place, tilt the lid at an angle on the slow cooker so that it is partially covering the top.
  • Use an oval-shaped slow cooker. This makes for a larger surface area to heat up the chex mix!
  • Don’t overcook or burn the Chex mix. Keep a close eye on it and know that when it’s finished, it will look dry! Specifically, I try to look at the wheat Chex cereal, because that will be the first to show signs of burning.

Chex Mix has to be the number one party snack. It’s a classic munchie that everyone loves, and nothing beats a homemade batch.Mix the ingredients in the crock pot
