French Toast in a Mug Recipe

Making meals in a mug just maybe my newest obsession and this French Toast Mug is where it all began! My son, Joey, and I saw a video on the Food Network on how to make 3 quick and easy meals in a mug and we were hooked.

We could hardly wait to try to make our French Toast Mug. Let’s just say this recipe speaks to me – First of all, it’s one dish (mug) to clean up. Second, it’s done in 2 easy steps. When all is said and done, I get a breakfast my kids are begging for more of rather than leaving leftovers.

This is also great for making French Toast for 2…. use two mugs! However, sometimes you may just have a french toast craving, but no one else is on board with that (go figure).

In that case, this single-serving French Toast Mug is the perfect solution! If you love French Toast, then you will go CRAZY for this quick French Toast recipe in a mug!

We adjusted the Food Network’s recipe slightly and I totally recommend using challah bread if you can – the sweetness of the bread just enhances the deliciousness!!

These are both total keepers!

I am telling you, this will be your new favorite weekend recipe! The egg bread mixture, with the hint of cinnamon, all warmed up and ooey gooey, will have your kids begging for it! It is such an easy french toast recipe. Yet, without the hassle of making french toast!

Ingredients

  • 1 piece buttered bread (we used challah and I would totally recommend if you have it.)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons syrup
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • a pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of chocolate chips (we used mini chocolate chips which melted really nicely)
  • Powdered sugar (optional)
  • Cinnamon sugar (optional)

Substitutions, Toppings or Add-Ins

Feel free to shake things up a little and get creative with your french toast in a mug! We love some of these great toppings or add-ins:

BREAD: Like I mentioned above, we used challah, also known as egg bread. If you cannot find challah, brioche is a great substitution.

Mix-Ins: The mini chocolate chips are our favorite, but the sky is the limit to add in! We love cinnamon chips, peanut butter, M&M’s, raspberries, strawberries, bananas, blueberries.

Toppings: Top it off with some whipped cream and sprinkles for a special occasion, or just to be fun!

How to make French Toast in a Mug

Like we said, this is the easiest french toast recipe ever! It literally takes less than five minutes.

  1. Mix together the egg, milk, syrup, cinnamon, and salt into a microwaveable mug.
  2. Cut off the crust of the bread and cube.
  3. Submerge the bread within the egg mixture of the mug.
  4. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  5. Sprinkle the optional cinnamon sugar on top.
  6. Microwave for a total of 2 minutes stopping every 30 seconds (count to ten and start again – this is so it doesn’t explode in your microwave.)
  7. Let cool for about 1-2 minutes.
  8. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top (again, optional).

This is so amazingly awesome!!! Easy to make too! I made mine in a small bowling added extra syrup on top and it’s so good! I used large hamburger buns (it’s all I had), I toasted then buttered them. I cooked it an extra 30 seconds too! ❤️

We like to add the chocolate chips after microwaving. I don’t tend to microwave chocolate. Turned out pretty good! Stays hot for a long while after coming out of the microwave 😅 Not recommended for large families – individual microwaving takes too long for more than 3 – might as well make french toast at that point if you have a flat plate that can fit 6-8 prices of bread. But the novelty is so cute and it’s a good recipe.

I’ve made this twice since I found it recently. I tweaked to my personal taste. I skipped cutting off the crusts, followed a suggestion to substitute brown sugar for the syrup, and skipped the chocolate chips. The first time I used wheat bread, and the second time, challah. Also, the second time I didn’t have milk, so I used water and half & half. Both times it came out delicious!!! This is definitely a keeper. I like the flexibility and the yumminess!

  4. This was awesome. It seemed to me basically microwave bread pudding, which I loved. I had some mostly stale cinnamon bread and half and half in the fridge that I have been trying to use up, so I used some of both of those to make it even more of a treat. So good. The liquid turned all sweet and custardy. I added some raisins and a little more cinnamon and it was spectacular.

  5. What the heck kind of a breakfast is that? You call that breakfast? Chocolate chips , syrup and white bread.. Fast, non nutrient carbs that wreck havoc to your blood sugar, the kids will come crashing down after an hour. The only thing good in that is the egg and maybe the milk.
    That’s not breakfast, that’s dessert.! Smh. ?

Let people live their lives geez if u don’t wanna eat it then don’t make it and get off their page lmao it’s not that hard, smh.

    2. I made it with low carb bread sugar free syrup and fat free half and half and it was perfect for diabetics leave th3 chocolate chips out

    3. Relax ….. geezzzzz
Use wheat bread, sugar free syrup or real maple syrup and sugar free choc chips or skip the chips.
You have never had choc chip pancakes or French toast for breakfast? Give me a break … there is no difference. Some people all they do is complain SMH

  6. If I want to make this for my family, do I need to cook them one at a time in the microwave or can I cook 2 or 3 at a time. Would it change the cooking time?

  7. Oh my!!! I am totally smitten with this! I made it as soon as I read it because I was hungry, it was morning and I wanted something good and quick. I used a couple of bite sized dark chocolate bars and three caramels in mine. It was awesomeness!!! Cooked perfectly, the hardest part was letting it cool enough to not burn my tongue! I followed the cooking instructions exactly too.???

  8. I made your recipe foe french toast. Delicious!! I live alone and this is something I can make just for me. Thanks. Now I will try most any recipe with your name on it. It was that good. Billie G.
