Homemade Watermelon Lemonade Drink

Making a Lemon and Watermelon drink at home couldn’t be any easier, especially because the best watermelon lemonade recipe begins with ripe, juicy melon when the produce is at its peak.

Watermelon and lemon juice make the perfect pair for this pretty pink beverage; with the natural sweetness of fruit, and a touch of tart flavor, there’s no reason why easy watermelon recipes should be much more than fresh fruit juice, cold water, and a little added sugar.

While many lemonade recipes call for simmering a simple syrup on the stove, I prefer a no-cook method that I can blend in 5 minutes and start sipping sooner!

And unlike the store-bought beverage, a drink made at home means you can prepare it without preservatives or artificial ingredients you can’t pronounce.

Tip from Our Recipe Developer

  • Use a fine-mesh strainer or sieve to make the watermelon juice into a clear liquid. I chose not to strain my liquid simply because straining would make this recipe more complicated. And my recipes are all about easy!
  • Buy your melon during watermelon season or you’ll end up with a tart version of this fruit.
  • In order to get the most juice from your lemons, make sure they’re at room temperature (or microwave them for about 15 seconds before juicing).
  • Fresh watermelon juice tends to settle in the pitcher so the lemonade needs to be stirred regularly.

Storage Tips

  • To Store: This lemonade can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days. I recommend covering the top of the pitcher with plastic wrap if your pitcher does not have a lid.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if my watermelon will be sweet?

To tell if a watermelon will be sweet, look for a darker yellow field spot, which usually means it was on the vine longer and is full of flavor.
If the field spot is white that’s a sign that the melon is not quite ripe. Larger “webbing” or “sugar spots” means that the melon is seeping out sugar and is usually the sign of a sweet melon.

How do I make a Watermelon Lemonade cocktail?

Simply add vodka, triple sec, or light rum to your beverage to make it boozy!

How do I juice my lemons?

I find it helpful to place my lemons on the counter and roll them around with a little bit of pressure before cutting and juicing them.
If you don’t have a lemon juicer, it’s easy to just cut them in half, stick a fork in the flesh and squeeze while rocking them fork back and forth.

Can I make my watermelon lemonade in advance?

You can make this recipe a few days ahead of time, but for ultimate freshness, I like to make mine the day before or the day of my party.
This recipe will last about 5 days in the refrigerator without ice. If you store it with ice it will dilute the lemonade.

Is homemade watermelon lemonade healthy?

It can be considered a healthy drink depending on what type and how much sugar you use to sweeten it. Using a natural sweetener (like agave) or honey is the healthiest option.
Lemon juice on its own is full of vitamin C and promotes hydration. Watermelon contains mostly water, but it’s full of vitamins like A, B6, and C, lycopene, as well as antioxidants.
Because watermelon is made mostly of water, This delicious drink will definitely keep you hydrated during the heat of summer!
