Boozy Frozen Lemonade (Alcoholic Frozen Lemonade Cocktail)

As the summer heat rises and my internal temperature begins to boil, I long for an adult version of my favorite childhood warm-weather drink. While this alcoholic frozen lemonade is not exactly comparable to an old-time cold glass of water mixed with your standard powdered lemonade mix, it is every bit as cool and refreshing and just as boozily delicious.

This is one of those super quick-to-prep beverages that not only beats the heat, but it is a deliciously sippable hydrating treat. To make your own homemade boozy frozen lemonade, you simply combine fresh lemon juice and sugar with icy lemon sorbet and vodka and blend until slushy. Sweet and tart, creamy and cold, this frozen cocktail has a zesty lemon flavor with the perfectly spiked zing!

There is something I find so delightful about the frozen fusion of vodka and lemonade. This recipe has the perfect balance of flavors–the hard liquor is bolstered by the sweetness and acidity of the lemon sorbet. I think that using sorbet instead of lemonade concentrate gives this drink so much more flavor too. And because lemon sorbet is made from only lemon juice and sugar, it is dairy-free, but with a creamy consistency.

Ingredients / Shopping List

  • Ice
  • Frozen lemon sorbet: Adds the perfect tartness and so much more lemon flavor than lemonade
  • Vodka: The neutral flavor is perfect for highlighting the sweet lemonade taste
  • Fresh squeezed lemon juice: I prefer fresh lemon juice because bottled lemon juice is more sour, which will result in needing to use more sweetener.
  • Granulated sugar: Adds sweetness to balance the sour lemon juice
  • Optional: Fresh lemon garnish

Substitutions

  • Alternate Spirits: If you don’t have vodka, try this same frozen lemonade recipe with equal amounts of rum or tequila.
  • Sweetener: If you prefer another sweetener other than refined sugar, you can try:
    • Honey–pairs perfectly with the tart lemon juice and adds a nice floral flavor to the drink.
    • Stevia–You can use liquid or powder stevia if you are on a low-carb diet.
    • Agave nectar–This is a great option if you are vegan.
  • Flavor Options: Use lime juice instead of lemon juice or even fresh squeezed orange juice would taste great.

Tips

  • If you wish to make this frozen lemonade “non-alcoholic” for the kids, you can just omit the vodka and replace it with ¼ cup water. It will still be delicious!
  • To make this an even easier drink, try substituting the fresh squeezed lemon juice and the sugar for ⅓ cup of good-quality, pre-made, lemonade.
  • To keep your frozen lemonade as cold as possible, place your freezer-safe serving glasses into the freezer for 5-10 minutes prior to filling them with your cocktail.
  • This recipe makes a smaller batch of drinks but can easily be doubled to serve more people.
  • You can easily adapt this recipe to make thicker frozen lemonade that can be eaten with a spoon. Simply use less liquid–the less liquid you use, the thicker it will be.
