Homemade Grinch Hot Cocoa Bombs

Grinch Hot Chocolate Bombs make a delicious green drink when you place them in the bottom of a mug and pour warm milk over them; the hot liquid begins to melt the chocolate orb, breaks open the Grinch hot chocolate balls, and reveals a surprise inside.

Simply stir, and watch the white milk turn to green and the fluffy marshmallows and candy float to the top.

This easy Grinch Hot Chocolate Bombs recipe begins by pouring melted green chocolate into sphere-shaped silicone molds, letting them harden, and filling them with white hot chocolate mix, mini marshmallows, candy cane pieces, and red heart sprinkles.

Then decorate each Grinch cocoa bomb with a drizzle of melted candy and your favorite festive colors.

Ingredients

  • Green candy melts: Feel free to use dark green or lime green chocolate melts, depending on your color preference.
  • White hot chocolate mix
  • Candy canes: You can use crushed peppermint candies instead of candy canes.
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Heart sprinkles: You can use red hearts or red and pink sprinkles, depending on what you have available.
  • White candy melts: You can also use white chocolate chips but be very careful not to overheat them as they will be too thick to drizzle.
  • Milk (to serve)

Substitutions and Additions

  • Choose Your Chocolate Color: You can use either dark or bright green candy melts for this recipe, depending on which Grinch-green color you prefer for your hot chocolate bombs. You can also use white chocolate or white candy melts and green food coloring to make a custom color if you wish.
  • Fill With Your Favorite Flavor: Feel free to use a different type of hot chocolate mix to change the final drink flavor or color. Try a mint hot chocolate mix, dark hot chocolate mix, or a regular hot chocolate mix with marshmallows. You can also add more or less mix so that your hot chocolate tastes just the way you like it. Keep in mind that the resulting hot chocolate will not be as green.
  • Serve In Steaming Milk: You can use any type of milk you prefer. Whole or 2% milk makes the creamiest and richest hot chocolate, but you could use low or nonfat milk as well. You can also use dairy free milks such as oat, almond, coconut, or soy milk.

How to Make Grinch Hot Chocolate Bombs

  1. Melt: Microwave the green candy melts for 30-45 seconds, stir, and continue heating in 20-30 second intervals, stirring in between, until the melted and smooth.
  2. Spread Into The Spheres: Swirl the melted green liquid in each circle of the silicone molds. Chill for 15-20 minutes or until completely hardened.
Pro Tip: You can use a spoon to spread it onto the sides of the sphere, and then turn the mold upside down quickly onto the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Fill: Remove the green semi-spheres from the molds and fill with hot chocolate, crushed candy cane, marshmallows, and heart sprinkles.
  4. Make The Full Circle: Reheat the green candy melts for 30-45 seconds until the liquid is melted and smooth again. Dip each empty mold into the melts, swirl it, and then place it on top of a filled sphere. Chill for 5-10 minutes to set.
  5. Decorate: Microwave the white candy melts for 30-45 seconds, stir, and heat again in 15-20 second increments until melted. Drizzle over the bombs and decorate with additional sprinkles or candy canes.
  6. Serve: Place in a large mug and pour in steaming hot milk. Stir well and enjoy!

Tip From Our Recipe Developer

  • Don’t overheat your melts! If the candy gets too hot it will seize and get lumpy and be very difficult to evenly distribute in the molds.
  • Give the molds plenty of time in the refrigerator to set up. You want the spheres to be completely hardened before you remove them from the mold. If they seem soft or warm, they are not ready.
  • Be gentle with the spheres but remember that the silicone molds are very flexible so you can peel them off of the hardened candy and even pop them inside out if necessary.
  • Don’t handle the spheres for too long or your fingers will melt holes through the hardened candy. I recommend leaving the spheres on the baking sheet at much as possible, only handling them when necessary. You can stick them back in the refrigerator to reset if needed.

Storage

  • To Store: Stored your Grinch bombs at room temperature, either in an airtight container or bag, for up to 60 days. They can also be stored in the refrigerator for 3-6 months.
  • To Freeze: Store your Grinch bombs in a freezer-safe container or bag in the freezer for 3-6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I store Hot Chocolate Bombs?

After your Hot Chocolate Bombs have chilled enough to set, they can be stored at room temperature, either in an airtight container or bag, for up to 60 days. Be sure to keep them out of direct sunlight, in a cool location. If they get too hot they may melt or get deformed. You can also keep them in the refrigerator or freezer for 3-6 months.

Do I have to fill my hot chocolate bombs with candy and sprinkles?

You add or omit any of the ingredients that go into the hot chocolate bombs. For example, you can omit the sprinkles and add more crushed candy cane, add more mini marshmallows or even add more of the hot chocolate mix if you’d like.

Can I add a design to my hot chocolate bombs to make them look fancy?

If you want to go extra fancy with your hot chocolate bombs, feel free to use white candy melts or melted chocolate chips to decorate the molds with a design. Let it chill in the refrigerator until set and then proceed with the green candy melts and the rest of the steps. Your final bombs will have the white or chocolate design inlaid in the green of the bomb, making them extra elegant.

What size molds are best for this recipe?

Don’t get molds that are too big or too small. I like to use 3 inch diameter semi sphere silicone molds for my hot chocolate bombs. Molds that are too big won’t fit in most mugs and may crack easier. If they are too small, they won’t hold enough hot cocoa with the marshmallow and candy pieces.
