  • Whole wheat flour: If your dog has a gluten intolerance, you can use gluten-free flour instead.
  • Water
  • Egg
  • Salt
  • Peanut butter: It’s crucial not to give your dog peanut butter containing Xylitol, as this sugar substitute is highly toxic to dogs and can cause life-threatening health issues.
  • Sweet potato
  • Plain Greek yogurt: You can use non-fat or a non-dairy alternative, like coconut yogurt, if your dog is lactose intolerant.
  • Supernatural Rainbow Softie Sprinkles: You can use any 100% natural sprinkles of your choice.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Pick Your Peanut Butter: You can use any non-natural peanut butter or natural peanut butter for this homemade dog treats recipe. BUT DO NOT substitute almond butter or any other nut butter, as most nuts are toxic to dogs. Do not use any peanut butter that contains Xylitol as it is toxic to dogs.

How to Make Dog Birthday Cookies

  1. Make The Cookie Dough Mixture: Mix together the flour, water, egg, and salt. Add in the peanut butter and sweet potato and mix until fully combined.
  2. Cut Out Cookies: Flatten the mixture to about ⅓ – ½ inch on a lightly floured surface. Cut out cookies and place them on the baking sheet, about 1 inch apart (These treats should cook flat and will not expand while cooking).
Pro Tip: Pinch the cookie cutters after pressing into the dough to remove the cut-out pieces better. If this doesn’t work, you can also remove the dough around the shaped cookie.
  3. Bake: Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 18-20 minutes. Cool completely to room temperature before frosting them.
  4. Form The Frosting: Mix together yogurt and peanut butter.
Pro Tip: It will be thick at first and will have the consistency of frosting in the end.
  5. Decorate The Doggie Desserts: Spread frosting on each cookie and top with sprinkles.
  6. Serve: Immediately share with your birthday pup!

Tips For Making The Best Dog Birthday Cookies

  • This dough is not sticky and should not stick to the surface or your hands. However, using flour while rolling and cutting the dough will make things even easier.
  • This dough does not need to chill before cooking.
  • Be sure you allow these to cool completely before adding frosting.
  • Be sure your sweet potato is cooked and cooled thoroughly before using it for this recipe. You will need less than 1 sweet potato. For the extra sweet potato pieces, you can sprinkle it inside your puppy’s dog food for their next meal.
  • Store the yogurt and peanut butter inside the refrigerator while baking the cookies. Having these ingredients chilled will make it easier to mix and become a firm, frosting consistency.

Important For Dog Safety

  • Each dog can react differently to any new treat that hits its belly. This is important to note when serving your pup something new for the first time. Serve your pup one treat within 24 hours to see how their belly responds before giving them multiple.
  • Be sure to check with your veterinarian any time introducing new food into your dogs diet.
  • It’s crucial not to give your dog peanut butter containing Xylitol, as this sugar substitute is highly toxic to dogs and can cause life-threatening health issues.
  • BE SURE TO USE 100% NATURAL SPRINKLES! Just like humans, dogs should enjoy sprinkles in moderation. And when enjoying sprinkles, they must be 100% natural.

How to Store Dog Birthday Cookies

  • To Store: Store these dog treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days after preparing.

Frequently Asked Questions

IS YOGURT SAFE FOR DOGS TO CONSUME??

Yogurt is high in calcium and protein and acts as a probiotic, making it good for your dog’s digestive system. However, too much yogurt may cause your dog to become sick because dogs aren’t used to large amounts of lactose. Plain Greek yogurt is the healthiest option for your furry friend.

Is peanut butter safe for dogs to consume?

Peanut butter is a good source of protein and healthy fats, vitamin B, and vitamin E, adding nutrition to these dog treats. Make sure your peanut butter has no xylitol, a sweetener found in some brands because it is toxic to dogs.

Is Sweet Potato safe for dogs to consume?

Sweet potato is a safe, healthy, and naturally sweet treat for dogs, offering a range of health benefits. It is high in fiber, low in fat, and contains several essential vitamins. When preparing a sweet potato to feed your dog, ensure it’s cooked. Raw sweet potatoes are difficult to chew and can cause stomach upset.

Dog Birthday Cookies

Serves — 24
Homemade Dog Birthday Cookies are an easy way to pamper your pet and are the perfect present for your puppy's birthday party.
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 35 minutes

Ingredients

Cookies:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • ¾ cup cooked sweet potato mashed

Frosting:

  • ¼ cup peanut butter chilled
  • ½ cup plain greek yogurt chilled
  • Supernatural Rainbow Softie sprinkles or any 100% natural sprinkles of your choice

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and prepare a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, water, egg and salt using an electric hand or stand mixer until the mixture has formed a dough-like consistency.
2 cups whole wheat flour, 1 cup water, 1 large egg, ½ teaspoon salt
  • Add in peanut butter and sweet potato and mix again until fully combined.
1 cup peanut butter, ¾ cup cooked sweet potato
  • Sprinkle a handful of whole wheat flour on a flat, clean surface to roll out the doggie treat mixture. Use the palms of your hands or a rolling pin to flatten the mixture to about ⅓ – ½ inch.
  • Use birthday shaped or dog bone shaped cookie cutter (cookie cutters in photos are linked in notes), and carefully cut out cookies throughout all of the dough and place them on the baking sheet. Do this until the baking sheet is full, leaving about 1 inch between cookies. You will likely cook 2-3 sheets.
  • Bake for 18-20 minutes.
  • When done, allow cookies to cool completely to room temperature.
  • When the cookies have cooled completely, begin creating your frosting. In a small mixing bowl (like the size of a cereal bowl) combine together yogurt and peanut butter. Mix well with a fork for 2-3 minutes (it will be thick at first) until fully mixed in. It should have the consistency of frosting.
¼ cup peanut butter, ½ cup plain greek yogurt
  • Use a butter knife to add the frosting to the cookies. Spread carefully and evenly, leaving an unfrosted rim around each cookie (this helps visually keep the shape).
  • Top with sprinkles and immediately share with your birthday pup!
