Dirty soda is a fun, fizzy drink that combines a carbonated beverage with flavored syrups, creams, and sometimes fruit garnishes or other sweeteners. The original dirty soda became popular in Utah, especially among the Mormons for its alcohol-free and caffeine-filled flavors.

What is a Dirty Soda

Dirty soda is a fizzy, sweet drink made by mixing soda—like cola, root beer, or citrus flavors—with flavored syrups and cream or coffee creamer. Think of it like a soda float without the ice cream. It first gained popularity in Utah and went viral thanks to TikTok and social media.

Dirty soda shops are now popping up around the country, where popular chains like, Sodalicious, Cool Sips, and Swig, are launching their own menu mocktails. Don’t be left in the dark–skip the sonic drive-in and make my other dirty soda recipes at home: Dirty Dr Pepper, Creamsicle Dirty Soda, and Dirty Shirley Float.

Ingredients for Dirty Soda

  • Orange soda: You can swap the orange soda for any type of carbonated beverage like Coke, Diet Coke, Dr. Pepper, Ginger Ale or Sprite, or any other soda!
  • Vanilla-flavored coffee creamer: Feel free to try any flavor coffee creamer, half and half, or other add-ins! You can make dirty soda without a heavy cream component – For a dairy-free or lighter version, try using alternatives like almond milk, oat milk, or even just a splash of non-dairy creamer.
  • Ice: Some fast food chain restaurants, such as Sonic or Chick-fil-A, will sell bags of their nugget ice or pebble ice. If you cannot find nugget ice cubes, you can substitute with crushed ice from an ice machine.

How to Make Dirty Soda (Swig Copycat Style)

  1. Grab The Glasses: Fill the glasses with plenty of ice.
  2. Pour In The Pop: Fill each glass with soda.
  3. Add Coffee Creamer: Pour the vanilla cream onto the ice so that it sits above the soda to create an ombre effect.
  4. Serve: Garnish with a fresh orange slice and a straw for a festive and fancy feel. Serve immediately.

Dirty Soda Tips and Tricks

  • Balance The Beverage: If your dirty soda is too sweet, balance it with a splash of club soda or lime juice to cut the sugar.
  • Cut The Calories: Cut the calories by using a diet orange soda or try sugar-free syrups if you’re watching sugar intake without compromising flavor.
  • Don’t Flatten The Fizz: To keep your soda fizzy, don’t stir too vigorously—this helps preserve the carbonation.
  • Ditch The Dairy: For a dairy-free version, swap out the cream or half-and-half with coconut milk or almond milk.

What Makes a Dirty Soda ‘Dirty’?

According to the founder of Swig, it’s called “dirty” because any time you add something to soda, it “dirties” the clean, fizzy beverage base. The result is a fun, flavorful drink with a sweet, creamy, or tangy twist!

Variations

  • Serve It Swig-Style: Starts with a base soda like Dr Pepper, Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, or Sprite, then mixes in flavored syrups, creams, or fruit purees.
  • Dirty Dr Pepper: A fun twist on the classic treat, made by mixing Dr Pepper with coconut coffee creamer or coconut syrup and lime for a smooth, tropical flavor.
  • Berry Dirty Soda: Make a fruity mix with strawberry or raspberry syrup for a refreshing berry burst to the fizzy base.

Can You Add Alcohol To Swig Dirty Soda

Why not spike your sip! Make this a creamsicle cocktail for adults only and add a shot of vanilla vodka or whipped cream vodka to the orange soda. You can also try an orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier or Triple Sec.

How to Store Dirty Soda

This drink is best served immediately. I do not recommend making this drink ahead of time because the soda will go flat the longer it sits. You can store the components separately in airtight containers in the fridge, and assemble right before serving to maintain the fizzy and layered texture.
