Halloween Oreo Truffles have a soft, moist Oreo and cream mixture in the middle surrounded by a hard chocolate shell; they’re just as delicious and easy to make a basic Oreo cookie ball but decorated with a spooky holiday season dessert.

Monster Oreo truffles are a fun treat to add to any dessert tray and are perfect not-so-scary snacks for a haunted Halloween party or handing out as favors or gifts.

Monster Oreo Balls Ingredients

  • Oreos: You can use regular or gluten-free Oreo cookies.
  • Cream cheese
  • Vanilla extract
  • White, light green, and purple melting wafers
  • Crisco shortening
  • Green, purple, and black jimmy sprinkles: Use the long jimmies and not the round sprinkles.
  • Candy eyes

Substitutions and Additions

  • Create Without Crisco: You can use vegetable oil if you do not have crisco. If you do, use half portion of the oil than you would crisco.
  • Candy Melt Colors: Feel free to dip your Oreo balls in any color chocolate coating you wish. Make your holiday monsters, mummies, and ghosts using white, blue, or orange candy melts too!
  • Other Oreo Ball Ideas: You can make different types of Oreo balls with almost any flavor of Oreo cookie. For some fun and festive truffle treats, try my Oreo Truffles Ornaments, Birthday Cake Oreo Balls, and surprise inside Oreo Balls.
  • Customize Your Candy: You can use a variety of colored sprinkles to make Oreo balls for any holiday or celebration. Add rainbow sprinkles for a birthday-themed party; red and green sprinkles for Christmas; pink and red sprinkles for Valentine’s Day; pretty pale colors for Easter.

How to Make Monster Oreo Balls

  1. Crush Your Cookies: Crush the Oreos until they are fine crumbs.
  2. Make The Middle Mixture: Mix together the Oreos, cream cheese, and vanilla until a dough-like mixture is formed.
  3. Roll Until Round: Scoop the mixture and roll it into balls. Chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours.
  4. Melt The Chocolate: Microwave the melting wafers, one color at a time, at 50% power or on defrost mode for 1 minute. Stir, add crisco, and microwave in 30 seconds bursts, stirring in between, until smooth and silky.
Pro Tip: It should have the consistency of dressing.
  5. Dip And Decorate: Dip the Oreo balls in the melted chocolate. Immediately add candy eyes and sprinkles to the top of each ball.
  6. Serve: Allow all monsters to chill for another 30 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Tips For Making The Best Monster Oreo Balls

  • I like to put green sprinkles on the green monsters, purple sprinkles on the purple monsters, and black sprinkles on the white monsters. However, you can form any pattern you wish!
  • Make sure to use softened cream cheese. I prefer using full-fat cream cheese for this recipe because it gives these treats the most flavor and richness. Reduced fat would still work, but they may not be as rich tasting.
  • Be sure to allow your balls to drip or remove any excess chocolate from the bottoms of your forks before placing them on the baking sheet. If you have too much-melted chocolate, it will drip and pool out at the bottom.
  • Use an electronic hand mixer or stand mixer to blend the truffle mixture. This will produce the best results versus mixing by hand alone.
  • Colored melting wafers can be sold at a craft store.
  • If you don’t have a blender or food processor, you can place your Oreo cookies in a Ziploc bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Make sure you crush the entire cookie and do not remove the filling!
  • These are best served chilled.

How to Store Monster Oreo Balls

  • To Store: Store any leftover Oreo balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • To Freeze: You can freeze the uncoated Oreo balls in the freezer in an airtight container, separated by wax paper to avoid sticking to each other, for up to 2 months. Allow the Oreo balls to thaw, then coat and decorate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Oreo balls need to be refrigerated?

Oreo balls should be kept in the fridge until you serve them. I think they taste best when cold. However, they can be left at room temperature. According to the FDA, cream cheese can be left out at room temperature for up to 2 hours.

Can I use chocolate chips instead of melting wafers to coat my monster Oreo balls?

Either candy wafer melts or almond bark is the best option to coat Oreo balls because they create a smooth texture. However, if you choose to use chocolate chips, you will need to add 1 tbsp of coconut oil to each 8 oz of chocolate chips you’re melting for a smooth finish.

What is the best way to dip Oreo balls in melted chocolate?

The best method to coat these balls in chocolate is to use a fork and gently tap any excess chocolate on the side of the bowl. I like to use a toothpick to remove the excess melted wafer from the bottom of the fork and then gently push the ball onto the baking sheet.
