In a food processor, add Oreos (break them apart slightly while adding) and crush until they are fine crumbs.
36 Oreos
In a large mixing bowl, combine oreos, cream cheese and vanilla extract. Mix with an eclectic hand or stand mixer for 1-2 minutes until fully combined and one dough-like mixture is formed.
8 ounces cream cheese, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Using a 2 tablespoon cookie scoop, scoop dough from the bowl and form into an even, smooth, round ball using the palms of your hands. Place each ball on a large cookie sheet prepared with parchment paper.
Place a cookie sheet inside the refrigerator to chill for 2 hours.
Near the end of the chill time, begin to prepare the melting wafers. Working one color at a time. Place the wafers in a microwave safe bowl and heat on 50% power or on defrost mode for 1 minute. Stir with a fork and add 1 tablespoon of crisco. Return to the microwave for additional 30 seconds bursts, stirring in between, until smooth and silky. It should have the consistency of dressing.
Dip 6-7 oreo balls inside the chocolate using two forks or dipping tools, coating it completely before adding it back on the cookie sheet. Be sure to scrape the bottoms of your forks or dipping tools to remove any excess chocolate. You can also gently sling the ball from side to side to remove any excess.
Immediately add candy eyes and sprinkles to the top of the ball. You can add candy eyes wherever to create fun and spooky monsters.
Green, purple, and black jimmy sprinkles, Candy eyes
Repeat steps 5-7 for each color of melting wafers.
Allow all monsters to chill for another 30 minutes before serving.
Notes
Storage:
To Store: Store any leftover Oreo balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
To Freeze: You can freeze the uncoated Oreo balls in the freezer in an airtight container, separated by wax paper to avoid them sticking to each other, for up to 2 months. Allow the Oreo balls to thaw, then coat and decorate.
Tips:
I like to put green sprinkles on the green monsters, purple sprinkles on the purple monsters, and black sprinkles on the white monsters. However you can form any pattern you wish!
Make sure to use softened cream cheese. I prefer using full-fat cream cheese for this recipe because I think it gives these treats the most flavor and richness. Reduced fat would still work, but they may not be as rich tasting.
Be sure to allow your balls to drip or remove any excess chocolate from the bottoms of your forks before placing them on the baking sheet. If you have too much melted chocolate, it will drip and pool out at the bottom.
Use an electronic hand mixer or stand mixer to blend the truffle mixture together. This will produce the best results versus mixing by hand alone.
