Peanut Butter and Carrot Dog Treats

Our easy Carrot Dog Treat recipe is packed with healthy, nutrient-dense ingredients that you can feel good about feeding to your furry friend. When you make dog biscuits at home, you know exactly what’s baked into each bone—no nitrates, harmful additives, or toxic chemicals—just pure, wholesome human food that’s safe for canine snacking.

After all, dogs are part of the family and deserve a dessert that’s both delicious and nutritious. These homemade peanut butter carrot cookies are naturally sweet and loaded with protein, vitamins, and minerals.

In my home, my kids love sneaking snacks to our two puppies, Po and Bella. With this carrot peanut butter dog biscuit recipe, I don’t have to worry! My little helpers have fun making the doggie dough; it’s easy to flatten and form bone shapes using cookie cutters.

Homemade dog biscuits serve as a budget-friendly alternative to store-bought options, providing a pet-safe snack that you can even share! The’re dairy free and great for sensitive stomachs.

Just like humans, every dog is different, so this is not meant to be a one-pup-fits-all easy dog treat recipe. Check with your vet before adding any new food to your dog’s diet.

Carrot Dog Treats Ingredients

Carrot dog treats ingredients.
  • Whole wheat flour: Oat flour can be substituted for whole wheat flour. Both are easy for dogs to digest and contain vitamins, minerals and fiber that are beneficial for your dog. If your dog has a gluten intolerance, you can use gluten free flour instead.
  • Baking powder: A leavening agent to help the treats rise and achieve a lighter texture.
  • Carrots: Add natural sweetness, moisture, and a boost of vitamins and fiber to this carrot treats for dogs. Baby carrots can be substituted for full size carrots; they will just take longer to shred. Make sure you do not peel the carrots.
  • Creamy peanut butter: Provides protein and healthy fats, making the treats tasty and satisfying. I used Jif no sugar added, but you can use natural creamy peanut butter or crunchy peanut butter if you prefer. Be sure that whatever peanut butter you choose does not contain xylitol as it is poisonous to dogs.
  • Water
  • Eggs: Add protein and help bind the ingredients together.
  • Honey: A natural sweetener that enhances flavor and provides some antioxidants.

Tips & Variations

  • Bake the Dog Bones: The cooking time for these carrot dog treats depends on how soft or crunchy you want them and how large your cookie cutter is.
  • Create The Cookie Dough: The dough should appear firm but not dry. If necessary, add a few more tablespoons of water.
  • Fill With More Fiber: Feel free to substitute a portion of the flour with oats, or you can add them alongside the other dry ingredients to add extra texture to the treats. Oats are a nutritious ingredient that provides fiber and can help with doggie digestion. You may need to adjust the moisture slightly, as oats can absorb water.
  • Custom Cut-Outs: Any cookie cutter will work for this easy dog buscuits recipe! I used bone shaped cookie Cookie cutters for my dog buscuits but this Paw Cookie Cutter, Birthday Cake and Birthday Hat Cookie Cutter, and Dog Bone Cookie Cutter will also look cute.

Proper Storage

  • To Store: Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 7 days.
  • To Freeze: You can freeze the treats in a gallon size freezer bag for up to 2 months with wax paper placed in between the layers. Allow the treats to thaw at room temperature, uncovered, overnight.

Can my dog eat all of these ingredients?

Yes. All of the ingredients in homemade carrot dog treats are safe for your pet. However, remember to consult with your veterinarian before introducing any new treats into your dog’s diet, especially if your dog has specific health conditions or dietary restrictions. Here’s a breakdown.

  • Eggs are a good source of protein, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals source. However, they should be thoroughly cooked to avoid the risk of salmonella or biotin deficiency.
  • Carrots are a healthy, low-calorie snack that provides vitamins (like vitamin A), fiber, and antioxidants. Most dogs enjoy the crunchy texture and natural sweetness. Just be sure to cut them into appropriate sizes to prevent choking, especially for smaller dogs.
  • Dogs love peanut butter and can eat it if it does not contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. You do want to be careful not to give your dog too much peanut butter, as it has a high-fat content.
  • Dogs can handle honey in small amounts. While small amounts of honey are generally safe for dogs, it is high in sugar. It should be given sparingly, especially if it’s a small dog.
  • Whole wheat flour is safe for dogs unless they have a specific wheat allergy or sensitivity. It’s nutrient-rich and full of dietary fiber, which aids in digestion and helps maintain a healthy weight by promoting a feeling of fullness.
