2cupswhole wheat flourDivide 1 ¾ cups for dough and ¼ cup for dusting work surface
2½teaspoons baking powder
1½cupscarrotswashed, dried and finely shredded (Do not peel the carrots)
1cupcreamy peanut butterno sugar added or natural creamy peanut butter(I used Jif no sugar added. Be sure it does not contain xylitol)
¼cupwater
2extra large eggs
2tablespoons honey
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 325°F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
In a medium size bowl, whisk together 1 ¾ cups of whole wheat flour and baking powder
Add the finely shredded carrots, creamy peanut butter, water, eggs and honey to a medium size mixing bowl and stir to completely combine.
Gradually stir in the whole wheat flour mixture, stirring just until well incorporated. The dough should appear firm but not dry. You can add a few more tablespoons of water as needed.
Dust your work surface and rolling pin with the reserved ¼ cup of whole wheat flour.
Roll dough out to about ¼ inch thickness.
Use a 3 inch dog bone shaped cookie cutter to cut out the dough and place on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the edges are set and golden brown. Transfer the treats to a cooling rack to cool completely.
Notes
Storage:
To Store: Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 7 days.
To Freeze: You can freeze the treats in a gallon size freezer bag for up to 2 months with wax paper placed in between the layers. Allow the treats to thaw at room temperature, uncovered, overnight.
Tips:
Be sure that whatever peanut butter you choose does not contain xylitol as it is poisonous to dogs.
The cooking time for these carrot dog treats is dependent on how soft or crunchy you would like them and how large your cookie cutter is.
The cookie dough should appear firm but not dry. You can add a few more tablespoons of water as needed.
Feel free to substitute a portion of the flour with oats, or you can add them in alongside the other dry ingredients to add extra texture to the treats. Oats are a nutritious ingredient that provides fiber and can help with doggie digestion. You may need to adjust the moisture slightly, as oats can absorb water.
Any cookie cutter will work for this easy dog buscuits recipe! I used bone shaped cookie Cookie cutters for my dog buscuits but this Paw Cookie Cutter, Birthday Cake and Birthday Hat Cookie Cutter, and Dog Bone Cookie Cutter will also look cute.
