Red White And Blue Finger Jello

Our Red White And Blue 4th of July Jello recipe is a fun way to showcase your patriotic pride in a perfectly portioned, portable jiggly jello, finger food package.

Making this layered finger jello is just as easy as preparing a regular bowl of jello using a single packet of powder and water, but this patriotic jello recipe has an extra step of adding unflavored gelatin to make it firmer.

And although there is a waiting period in between the flavors so each can fully set, it will keep the colors separate so you can see all 7 layers when you slice your red white and blue jello jigglers.

Shape your handheld treats into 4th of July Jello Stars or cut them into squares, there’s something fun about eating food with your fingers as you celebrate the fourth with your friends!

What Is Finger Jello

Jello is nothing new and comes in many shapes and sizes (think jello shots and jello pie). But nothing is more fun to eat than jello you can hold in your hands! Finger Jello isn’t too much different than a regular bowl of jello, but it’s definitely a bit firmer so that it can be picked up and eaten with your fingers, without making a mess!

Why We Love This Layered Jello Jigglers Recipe

  • Easy to make festive food to celebrate the 4th.
  • Uses only 4 ingredients plus water.
  • Perfect way to make any patriotic party perfectly sweet.
  • Wiggly, jiggly, and full of fun fruit flavor.
  • Great for Fourth of July barbecues, potlucks, holiday parties, Memorial Day, and Labor Day.

How to Make Red White And Blue Jello

  1. Make The Blue Layer: Whisk together a blue jello mix with gelatin and add boiling water. Pour the mixture into the bottom of the baking dish and place in the fridge to set.
Pro Tip: It will take about 20 minutes to fully set.
  2. Make The White Layer: Whisk together the sweetened condensed milk and gelatin, and then add boiling water. Leave on the counter to cool to room temperature. Pour 1/3 of the cooled milk mixture over the set blue layer and place back in the fridge to set. Set aside the remaining two-thirds.
Pro Tip: The condensed milk layer does not take as long to set as the jello layer. It should set in approximately 10 minutes.
  3. Make The Red Layer: Whisk together the red jello with gelatin and add boiling water. Allow to cool to room temperature. Pour the cooled red mixture over the set condensed layer. Place back in the fridge and allow to set.
Pro Tip: It will take approximately 15 mins to set.
  4. Load On The Layers: Once the red layer is set, pour another 1/3 of the white layer over top. Place in the fridge to set, about 10 minutes. Repeat with a blue jello layer, a white layer, and finally a red layer.
Pro Tip: Make sure that the jello is completely cool before layering. As you add more layers, the layers will set quicker than the last with the last red layer setting in about 7-10 minutes.
  5. Cut With Cookie Cutters: Once all the layers are set, cut out star shapes.
Pro Tip: I used decorative toothpicks to ensure that all the layers stay together.
  6. Serve: Store in the fridge until you are ready to serve. Enjoy!

Tips For Making Red White And Blue Jello

  • Only the first blue layer can go into the baking dish warm. Each additional layer must be cooled completely before adding. If you don’t, the warm layer will melt the previous layer and the colors will mix together.
  • It is vital that each layer is completely set before adding the next.
  • Shapes aren’t necessary, just use a sharp knife to slice into squares or any other shape.
  • You cannot freeze this recipe.

How to Store Red White and Blue Jello

  • To Store: These jigglers will last up to 4 days in a sealed container in the refrigerator. After that, the gelatin starts to break down.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the white layer in this jello recipe?

The white layer isn’t actually a jello layer at all, but rather a milk mixture formed by combining sweetened condensed milk with gelatin and water. The milky layer is sweet and pairs perfectly with the other fruity flavors.

What if the condensed Layer starts to set too soon?

If you find that the condensed layer is starting to set while you are waiting, just place it in a large bowl with hot water in it. The heat will melt the condensed milk and allow you to whisk it smooth again.

Layered Red White And Blue Jello for a July 4th finger food! Perfect for an Independence Day dessert, Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Prep Time 40 minutes
Cook Time 0 minutes
Set Time 2 hours
Total Time 2 hours 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 small berry blue jello mixes
  • 2 small red jello mixes either cherry or strawberry
  • 14 ounce (415 ml) can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 8 teaspoons (4 packets) of gelatin divided
  • 6 cups boiling water divided

Instructions

  • Spray the baking dish liberally with cooking spray and use a paper towel to evenly distribute it to all the corners and to clean up any excess.
  • In a small bowl, mix together one of the blue jello mixes with 1 teaspoon (half a packet) of gelatin and add 1 cup of boiling water. Whisk together and pour the mixture into the bottom of the baking dish. Place in the fridge immediately to set. It will take about 20 minutes to fully set.
  • While the blue layer is setting, start working on the white layer. Pour the sweetened condensed milk into a medium mixing bowl. Add 4 teaspoons (2 packets) of gelatin and add two cups of boiling water. Whisk together until fully mixed. Leave on the counter and allow to cool to room temperature. It MUST be cooled before using.
  • Once the condensed milk is cooled, pour 1/3 of the mixture over the set blue layer. Set aside the remaining two-thirds. Place back in the fridge to set. The condensed milk layer does not take as long as the jello layer. This layer should set in approximately 10 minutes.
  • While the white layer is setting, immediately start the red layer so that it has time to cool. In a small bowl, mix 1 box of red jello with 1 teaspoon of gelatin. Add 1 cup of boiling water and whisk together until fully dissolved. Allow to cool to room temperature.
  • Once the red gelatin mixture is cooled, pour the layer over the set condensed layer. Place back in the fridge and allow to set. It will take approximately 15 mins to set.
  • Once the red layer is set, pour another 1/3 of the white condensed milk layer over top. If you find that the condensed layer is starting to set while you are waiting, just place it in a large bowl with hot water in it. The heat will melt the condensed milk and allow you to whisk it smooth again. Place in the fridge to set, about 10 minutes.
  • Repeat step 2 with the blue jello, ensuring that the jello is completely cool before layering. Continue going back and forth between jello and condensed milk layers until complete, ending with the last layer of red jello. As you add more layers, the layers will set quicker than the last with the last red layer setting in about 7-10 minutes.
  • Once all the layers are set, use a star cookie cutter to cut out a star shape. I used decorative toothpicks to ensure that all the layers stay together.
  • Store in the fridge until you are ready to serve.
