How to Make Peppermint Patties

  1. Make The Mint Filling: Mix together the sweetened condensed milk and peppermint extract and then mix in your powdered sugar with an electric mixer.
Pro Tip: You should have a stiff dough that is not sticky.
  2. Form Balls and Flatten: Roll the dough into balls, place them on your tray, and flatten them into thick disc shapes. Freeze for an hour.
  3. Coat In Chocolate: Microwave the almond bark in 30-second intervals until melted and smooth. Dip the peppermint patties into the chocolate, place onto the parchment paper, decorate with sprinkles if desired.

Tip From Our Recipe Developer

  • You can make these large like a regular-size peppermint patty or a smaller size.
  • Feel free to add some festive sprinkles, but they are still great without them.
  • The chocolate hardens quickly, so be prepared to add any sprinkles immediately after dipping. Otherwise, the sprinkles will roll right off!
  • Make sure you freeze these peppermint patties before dipping. They are delicate and can melt fast in the chocolate if not frozen.
  • I like to keep my candy in the fridge until serving to ensure they stay nice and firm.

Storage

  • To Store: Store your homemade peppermint patties in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.
  • To Freeze: Store your peppermint patties in a freezer safe container and freeze for up to 2 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these homemade peppermint patties taste like the original York Peppermint Patty Candy?

These homemade patties are a close copycat of the famous York Peppermint Patty, especially if you decide to dip your candy in dark chocolate. My recipe produces a patty that’s a bit thicker than the original because it makes it a bit easier to dip. However, you could press down to make them flatter if you prefer them to look like the name brand too.

What is the best way to dip mint patties in melted chocolate?

The best method to coat these candies in chocolate is to use a fork and gently tap any excess chocolate on the side of the bowl. I like to use a toothpick to remove the excess melted almond bark from the bottom of the fork and then gently push the patty onto the tray.

Can I use chocolate chips to dip my patties?

Either almond bark or candy wafer melts are the best options to coat your patties because they create a smooth texture. However, if you choose to use chocolate chips, you will need to add 1 tbsp of coconut oil to each 8 oz of chocolate chips you’re melting for a smooth finish.
