grinch fudge ingredients - condensed milk, butter, white chocolate chips, vanilla extract, green food coloring and red candy hearts

Grinch Fudge Ingredients

  • White chocolate chips: I used Ghirardelli brand chips but feel free to use your favorite.
  • Sweetened condensed milk
  • Salted butter
  • Clear vanilla extract
  • Gel green food coloring: I used Electric Green #162 – Americolor brand.
  • Extra-large red heart sprinkles: I used Wilton brand red JUMBO hearts.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Make With Morsels: If you don’t have white chocolate chips, you can swap equal amounts of white baking chips or morsels. You can also substitute bars of white chocolate broken into small pieces.
  • Make It Minty: You can prepare Grinch peppermint fudge by replacing the vanilla extract with pure peppermint extract or mint extract.

How to Make Grinch Fudge

  1. Melt The Mixture: Heat the white chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk, and butter until smooth and fully melted. (Image 1)
Pro Tip: Be sure to stir often to avoid burning the white chocolate chips. This should take 5-6 minutes.
  2. Color Your Candy: Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and food coloring. (Image 2)
  3. Pour In The Pan: Spread the fudge in an even layer in the pan and top with red candy hearts. (Image 3 & 4)
Pro Tip: The 5 rows should be spaced about ½-¾ inches apart so that each square has a single heart.
  4. Cool And Chill: Allow your fudge to cool at room temperature before placing it into the refrigerator to set up and chill fully.
  5. Slice And Serve: Lift the fudge out of the pan and slice into 25 pieces. Enjoy!
Pro Tip: Use the overhanging aluminum foil as a handle to lift the fudge.

How to Make Fudge in the Microwave

White chocolate melts best when heated on the stovetop because you want it to heat very gently. However, you can make it in the microwave.

Melt the white chocolate chips in the microwave on medium in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until smooth. Then mix in the other ingredients, pour the mixture in the pan, and follow the steps as written.

Tips For Making Frinch Fudge

  • The Wilton brand JUMBO red heart candy sprinkles are approximately ½ inch in diameter. If your heart sprinkles are not that large, you can cut smaller serving-size pieces and place your hearts accordingly onto your warm fudge to garnish.
  • I like to use the Americolor Brand Gel Food coloring for its consistency and variety of colors available. Remember that different green brands will yield different final results of the “Grinch” color of your fudge.
  • Make sure you are using a gel, not liquid, food coloring. Liquid-based food colors can alter the texture of your fudge or even cause the chocolate to seize up when mixed in.
  • I like to use a small plastic spatula or spoon to scrape out all the sweetened condensed milk from the can. If you pour it out, you can inadvertently leave a couple of tablespoons in the can.
  • Be sure you use sweetened condensed milk and not evaporated milk. Your fudge will not set if you use evaporated milk.
  • To cut your fudge, use a large chef’s knife. Warm the knife by running it under warm water, then dry it off with a towel before slicing.

How to Store Grinch Fudge

  • To Store: This Grinch Fudge can be stored in an airtight container on the counter or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • To Freeze: You can freeze this Grinch fudge tightly wrapped for up to two months. However, when you thaw it in the refrigerator, it may cause the red heart candies to bleed from the added moisture from the freezer and the refrigerator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best vanilla extract to use for my fudge?

I prefer to use clear vanilla extract (also known as vanilla flavoring) when working with white chocolate so that the vanilla extract does not alter the color of the white chocolate when melted. If you can not find the clear extract, then you can certainly use a standard vanilla extract. It will still taste delicious.

What kind of white chocolate chip should I use for my fudge?

Be sure to use a good quality white chocolate chip for this recipe. I find that the generic or cheaper brands do not melt as well and tend to seize up when melting. Ghirardelli is a trusted brand that is easily found in most grocery stores in the baking aisle and is the brand I use most often.

Can I use evaporated milk instead of sweetened condensed milk?

No! Sweetened condensed milk is NOT the same as canned evaporated milk. They can not be substituted for each other in recipes. They are typically found next to each other on the grocery store baking aisle shelf. Be sure to use a spoon or small rubber spatula to scrape out all the thick, sweetened condensed milk from the can, as you need all of the contents for this recipe.
