Easy Homemade Broccoli Slaw

Coleslaw is the ultimate side dish. It can be served with just about anything, everyone loves it, and it’s super easy to make. It’s especially amazing during the summer with a BBQ meal or anything off the grill. You just can’t go wrong with a good slaw.

As with any classic side dish, it’s fun to switch it up and make it a little different each time. Broccoli slaw is just that. It’s a fresh new take on a classic coleslaw side dish. Just like your traditional coleslaw, it’s creamy, crunchy, and delicious.

This recipe is a cold salad made using a bag of already prepped broccoli slaw mixed with our creamy homemade slaw dressing that is the perfect amount of sweet. It’s super easy and makes for the best summer salad or side dish. You will love this fun new way to eat your slaw!

What is Broccoli Slaw?

Broccoli slaw is made very similarly to traditional coleslaw. The major difference is that in place of the cabbage that you find in normal slaw, you will be using shredded raw broccoli. This is where it’s name comes from.

Truthfully, I don’t think many would even notice the difference unless they were told. I love the taste of the broccoli slaw and the slight difference it has to a more classic coleslaw.

Ingredient Substitutions for Broccoli Slaw

Onion: The red onion in this slaw adds great flavor, however if you’re not a huge fan of onions they could be left out. You could also use green onions instead for a more mild onion flavor.

Vegetables: The great thing about broccoli slaw is that you can add additional veggies as you like. For example, I love to add in peppers of all colors in this recipe. Another wonderful addition is shredded carrots!

Additional Garnishes: Dried cranberries, sliced apples, bacon, and sunflowers are all some of my favorites to mix in. Pick your favorite or load them all in for a delicious treat!

Frequently Asked Questions

What to Serve with Broccoli Slaw

Broccoli slaw is one of those side dishes that can be paired with just about anything! I even enjoy it solo as a lunch some days (I love to add some chicken breast pieces). Its versatility makes it a great dish to bring to a potluck or even a tailgate, where there are sure to be lots of different dishes with varied flavors.

Some of my other favorite meals to serve broccoli slaw with include burgers, hot dogs, or grilled chicken. Pretty much anything off the grill. It’s also great alongside any sort of dish that includes BBQ sauce, as the flavors complement each other very well.

How to Store Broccoli Slaw

In the fridge: The best way to store your broccoli slaw is to refrigerate it in an airtight container. Properly stored, homemade broccoli slaw will last for 3 to 5 days in the fridge. It’s also best to store it in the fridge between servings to keep it as fresh and crisp and as possible.

Can You Freeze Coleslaw

I don’t recommended freezing any type of coleslaw, because this recipe calls for mayonnaise. Mayonnaise does not freeze well and tends to separate when it is thawed. This can leave you with a watery dressing.
