How To Make Birthday Cake Cookies
Our Birthday Cake Kiss Cookies are so easy to make using my favorite shortcut: a box of white cake mix is quickly beaten together with butter and eggs to produce the perfect cookie dough base for baking into birthday cookies.
This birthday cake cookies recipe couldn’t be easier – simply scoop out balls of batter, cover them in colorful sprinkles, and bake them in the oven until the edges begin to brown.
The best part of this birthday cookies recipe happens when the treats are fully baked; you press a Hershey’s kiss into each middle so that the warm dough cradles the chocolate candy and holds it in place as it cools.
White or yellow cake mix cookies are a fun and festive, tasty twist to the traditional peanut butter blossoms; soft and chewy on the inside with a colorful outside coating, these are the cutest birthday kiss cookies that belong at your party!

Birthday Cake Kiss Cookies Ingredients
- White cake mix
- Eggs
- Salted butter: You can substitute unsalted butter and a pinch of salt instead.
- Colorful sprinkles or non-pareils
- Birthday Cake Kisses (or any flavor Hershey Kiss)
Substitutions and Additions
- Make With Another Cake Mix: You can also make this recipe with yellow, red velvet, chocolate, or funfetti cake mix (for more of a birthday cake flavor) to match any season or party theme. Try a strawberry or lemon cake in the summer or make chocolate cake mix cookies for chocolate lovers.
- Decide How To Decorate: You can use any sprinkles or nonpareils to decorate your cookies. You can even use sanding sugar if you’d like, though you won’t get the matching rainbow effect that the other sprinkles will give. You can even use this recipe to make holiday-themed cookies by using red, white and blue sprinkles for the 4th of July, black and orange ones for Halloween, or red and green at Christmas time.
- Choose Your Chocolate: You can substitute your favorite flavor Hershey Kisses or Hugs for these cookies if you prefer. Use dark chocolate or almond kisses for a chocolate cookie, put a candy cane or hot chocolate kiss on a Christmas cookie or use the Strawberry Ice Cream Cone Kisses with a lemon cookie for a “strawberry lemonade” flavor.

How to Make Birthday Cake Kiss Cookies
- Create The Cookie Dough: Beat together the cake mix, eggs, and melted butter until a smooth dough forms. Allow the dough to sit for about 5 minutes before scopping.
- Coat The Cookies: Roll the dough into balls and cover in sprinkles.
- Bake: Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 7-11 minutes or until the edges begin brown and get firm.
- Add A Kiss: Press a chocolate Kiss into the center of each slightly cooled cookie.
- Serve: Serve and enjoy!
How To Avoid Sticky Dough
If you are having trouble with your dough, there are a couple of things that you can do to make it easier to work. First, try covering and chilling it for about 30 minutes. This will probably be all you need to do to get perfectly pliable but not overly sticky dough. Alternatively, you can drop the cookie dough directly into the sprinkles or non-pareils and shape it into a ball after it has been completely coated. This will keep it from sticking to your hands.
Melted or Unmelted Middle?
Decide how soft or hard you want your Kisses before making your cookies. The time that you allow the cookies to cool before pressing in the Kisses will make a huge difference in how soft the Kisses get.
For example, if you press the Kisses in right out of the oven they will melt and any touch will cause them to lose their shape. The longer you allow the cookies to cool, the less the Kisses will melt. If you let the cookies cool completely first the Kisses will remain hard. I like to let the cookies cool for 3-5 minutes but you can adjust that to match your preferences.
