Banana Cream Pie Pudding Shots are a tasty twist on the traditional ice cream treat, made using a banana pudding package mix, milk, and moonshine to recreate the original recipe in a fun jello shot form.

Filled with the same classic banana split flavors, this dessert is a cool and creamy cocktail prepared in a perfectly portioned, portable cup.

Ingredients

  • Whole milk
  • Banana pudding cream moonshine: I used Ole Smoky brand – this can be found at most liquor stores.
  • Instant banana cream flavored pudding mix: I used Jello brand pudding for his recipe, but any brand of instant pudding will be fine.
  • Squirt whipped topping: I used extra creamy Reddi Whip brand but you can use any whipped cream or whipped topping you prefer.
  • Chocolate sauce dessert topping: I used Ghirardelli brand that comes in a squirt bottle but you can use your favorite chocolate syrup.
  • Rainbow sprinkles
  • Banana
  • Maraschino cherry

Substitutions and Additions

  • Pick Your Pudding: You can substitute the banana cream pudding mix with either vanilla pudding or white chocolate flavored pudding mixes. Make sure you use an instant pudding mix regardless of which flavor you choose. The cook and serve kind will not set up properly if you try to use it in this recipe.
  • Substitute With Schnapps: If you use a banana liqueur instead of moonshine, I recommend 99 Bananas schnapps, but you could also use Banana Jack or Banana Rum if you prefer.
  • Create Some Crunch: Add some crunch to your banana split with your favorite crushed nuts, like peanuts, walnuts, pecans, or pistachios.

How to Make banana Split Jello-Shots

Banana Split Pudding Shots are an easy way to transform a delicious ice cream dessert into fun party food. Each boozy bite is rich and creamy and tastes just like the traditional treat.

  1. Prepare The Pudding: Whisk together the milk, moonshine, and pudding mix for 2 minutes or until just set. Pour the pudding mixture into shot cups and chill for 2 hours, or up to overnight.
  2. Serve: Garnish with a squirt of whipped topping, a drizzle of chocolate sauce, rainbow sprinkles, a slice of fresh banana, and a maraschino cherry. Serve and enjoy!

Tip From Our Recipe Developer

  • Make sure you drain your maraschino cherries well and lightly pat them dry with a paper towel. If they are too wet when you use them to garnish then the moisture will melt your whipped topping.
  • To cut calories, you can use fat-free pudding mix.
  • I like to line up my shot cups on a flat, firm, moveable surface like a tray or cookie sheet. This makes it easier to move them back and forth from the fridge.

Storage

  • To Store: Store in individual pudding shot cups, covered, in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  • To Freeze: I do not recommend freezing a pudding shot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I prepare my banana split jell-o shots in advance?

It is best to serve these banana split jell-o shots while they are chilled and immediately after garnishing them. You can make these ahead and store them, with their lids on, in the refrigerator for up to 5 days before garnishing and serving them.

What if i cannot find banana pudding flavored moonshine?

You can easily find the banana pudding-flavored moonshine at most local liquor stores but if it’s not available, you can substitute a good quality banana liqueur (aka creme’ de banana).
Keep in mind that banana pudding-flavored moonshine has a milky look to it whereas the banana liqueurs are typically clear or have a yellow color (depending on the brand) to them.
This will just make your banana split jell-o shots slightly different in color. If you substitute the moonshine for a banana liqueur, then I would suggest reducing the amount to 1⁄2 cup and increasing the amount of whole milk to 1 cup.
The straight banana liqueur has a stronger flavor profile than the sweet banana flavor of the banana pudding cream moonshine.
You can order the banana pudding cream moonshine directly from the Ole Smoky Mountain Moonshine company if needed.

What if i cannot find 2 oz. jell-o shot cups?

You can substitute the Jell-O shot cups for 2 oz. condiment cups with lids. These actually work great if you plan on making your banana split jell-o shots in advance.
This will allow you to cover each with a lid and easily stack them in your refrigerator until you are ready to garnish and serve them.
You can find these in your grocery store where you find all the disposable storage containers like bags, plates, and plastic wrap.

Can I Make my own whipped cream instead of using a store-bought whipped topping?

Yes, you can easily make your own whipped topping by whipping heavy whipping cream with powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
My homemade whipped cream recipe is so simple.
