Healthy Homemade Apple Chips

It’s hard to think of many foods that are more fitting for fall weather than apples. That’s why these homemade air fryer apple chips are the perfect quick and healthy snack that delivers an addictively sweet and fat-free crunch in every bite.

I love to recreate recipes that are normally deep-fried in oil or baked in the oven into nutritious alternatives, especially when done in only a fraction of the time.

We make it so easy to get a serving of fruit into your day’s diet. These chips offer the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients of an apple, but are even more delicious and have a similar crispy crunch as processed potato chips. It’s the good for you chip that only tastes like an indulgence!

Why We Love These Air Fryer Apple Chips

  • Made with only 6 simple ingredients.
  • Chips are ready for snacking in about 20 minutes.
  • Healthy and nutritious snack you can feel good about eating.
  • Easy to pack as a lunch box treat, bring on a hike, or serve as an after-school snack.
  • Apples are available all year long, so there’s no need to limit air fryer apple chips to the fall season.
  • Low in calories; big in flavor!
  • Gluten-free, fat-free, paleo, oil-free air-fried treat.

Ingredients / Shopping List

  • Granulated white sugar: You can switch this out for brown sugar, or another type of sweetener you may have. Coconut sugar or stevia are great alternatives.
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Sea salt
  • Lemon juice: Feel free to replace this with lime juice. I used juice from concentrate in this recipe, but you can also use fresh juice.
  • Honey: Maple syrup or agave nectar are great options as well. For a more tart apple chip, you can leave the honey out altogether.
  • Pink Lady apples: Feel free to use another favorite type of apple. I like any crisp type.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Switch the Spices: Use cardamom, nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice instead of cinnamon.
  • Vary the Crisp Factor: Make these crisper for snacking, but softer for topping granola.
  • Vary the Variety: While I love Pink Lady apple chips, Gala, Fuji, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Cortland, and Empire are also great options.

Tips

  • If your apples are really moist, you may need to add a little bit of extra cooking time.
  • A mandolin is helpful for slicing your apples, however a very sharp knife can also work well.
  • Don’t worry about making uniform shapes, but do try to get the slices to be the same thickness.
  • Before storing the chips, make sure they are completely cool. If they are still warm, they can collect condensation, which will cause them to become less crispy when you store them.
  • Your apple chips may not be fully crispy when done, but don’t worry, they will become crispier as they cool.
  • Cook time will depend on the thickness of your apple slices. If they are very thin they may cook a bit quicker.

Storage Tips

  • To Store: Keep your apple chips in an airtight bag or container on the countertop for about 5 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best apples for the chips?

There are 7500 different apple varieties that grow throughout the world; of those, 2500 grow in the United States. When making these apple chips, you can pick just about any apple you want to use that is local to you. Or you can try different apples each time you make these chips.

What can I serve with these apple chips?

You can also add apple chips to your favorite trail mix, morning breakfast granola, oatmeal, salads, or yogurt. You can also dip them in your favorite dips or sauces.

How do I store these Apple Chips?

Keep your apple chips in an airtight bag or container on the countertop. They will be good for
around five days.

Why are some of my apple chips less crispy than others?

If you have overlapping apple chips in the air fryer, they often won’t crisp up in the areas where they overlap. Try to keep a tiny bit of space between each apple chip.

How do I prevent my apple chips from burning?

Sometimes the smaller apple chips will get caught in the heating fan and burn. If the apple chip is heavy enough, this shouldn’t be a problem. I like to use a small metal rack to hold some of those chips down during the cooking process if I notice this happening.

How do I crisp my apple chips at the same rate?

It’s difficult to get all of the apple chips to crisp up at the same rate due to the difference in size and thickness. Make sure to slice them the same thickness, and try to keep the smaller slices together in a batch, and the larger sizes in a different batch. That way, if your larger slices need a little more time to crisp up, you can add a couple more minutes without worrying about burning the smaller chips.

  • 1-2 Pink Lady apples

Instructions

The best part about them is that they are healthy & do not have unnecessary fat. That is why I can enjoy them without the fear of that extra fat.
