I get so excited for summertime. Are you the same way? I am not a big winter fan, I am always so ready for the warmer months when they come around (I guess I live in the wrong part of the county!)
But, one thing that I do love about winter is hot cocoa. It’s one of my favorite things about the cold months of the year. Especially when I make my specialty Hot Chocolate Bombs.

Variations / Options / Add-ins
- SWEETENED VANILLA ALMOND MILK: You can also use sweetened coconut milk too. Any sort of milk with some extra sweetener makes this drink extra delicious. Regular whole or 2% milk also works.
- HOT COCOA MIX: I would advise getting the hot cocoa mix that doesn’t have any marshmallows or anything extra inside them, as those won’t dissolve in a cold drink. Although I used a plain hot chocolate mix, feel free to use your favorite type of hot chocolate flavorings for this.
- GRANULATED WHITE SUGAR: You can use brown sugar or another type of sweetener instead.
- CHOCOLATE SYRUP: Use your favorite type of chocolate syrup. Or, you can try this with some caramel syrup instead. I love caramel with chocolate.
- COOL WHIP: This is totally optional as a garnish and any whipped topping will do. If you want to make homemade whipped cream, check out our homemade recipe!
Frequently Asked Questions
You can store this in the refrigerator for a few hours before needing to drink it, otherwise the consistency will change too much. You can also freeze this and use it for a yummy popsicle cold treat later. This is best when fresh.
Chocolate shavings can be a bit tricky. You will need a potato peeler and a long, cold piece of chocolate bar. Using the potato peeler, and with a decent amount of pressure, peel alongside the long side of the bar, pushing away from you. It might take a littler practice, but eventually you should be able to get little swirls of chocolate shavings.
You can use a baking bar, or even just a Hershey’s chocolate bar
