This Whipped Hot Chocolate recipe makes the most decadent mug of creamy hot cocoa with just 4 ingredients (plus optional garnish) in only 2 quick minutes. It is so easy to recreate the delicious drink that first found its fame on TikTok, with its smooth and creamy texture and sweet chocolatey taste, but this one swaps out the coffee so it’s perfect for kids to sip.
Easy-To-Make Mug of Whipped Hot Chocolate
Based on the TikTok trend, this Whipped Hot Chocolate is my favorite version of the viral whipped coffee recipe, simply because it is so easy to change the coffee ingredient for hot cocoa mix so that kids and adults can enjoy its warm and cozy comforts. And as the cool weather arrives, there is nothing I’d rather sip than rich whipped chocolate sitting atop a mug of hot milk–it’s perfectly warming for cold winters.
This drink starts by turning a whipped cream and hot cocoa mixture into soft peaks and then adding the fluffy chocolate to the top of a steaming mug of hot milk. Doesn’t that sound delicious? While it may taste similar to a basic hot chocolate, its velvety smooth and creamy texture and chocolate cloud-like presentation make it feel fancier and its flavor more sophisticated than any regular cup of cocoa.

- Hot cocoa mix: I recommend using a very good quality hot cocoa mix like Ghirardelli Double Chocolate.
- Powdered sugar
- Garnish with mini marshmallows, chocolate sauce and chocolate sprinkles (optional)

- Add Some Extracts: Add a bit of peppermint extract for a peppermint chocolate flavor, coffee extract (or strong coffee or espresso) for a mocha flavor, or try orange, almond, or any other flavor extract you love with chocolate.
- Add liqueur: For an adult cocktail version, feel free to add some coffee liquor, creme de menthe, cinnamon flavored liquor, or any of your other favorites into the milk.

How to Make the Recipe
- This Whipped Hot Chocolate recipe makes the most decadent mug of hot cocoa with just 4 ingredients (plus optional garnish) in only 2 quick minutes. It is so easy to recreate the delicious drink that first found its fame on TikTok, but this one swaps out the coffee so it’s perfect for kids to sip.Whip the heavy cream, hot cocoa mix and powdered sugar to soft peaks with a mixer.
- Heat the milk in a mug in the microwave.
- Pro Tip: Heat on high for 1 minute and 45 seconds. This will scald the milk (not boiling it), but you can heat it for longer if you want a hotter cup of milk.
- Remove milk from the microwave and place it on the counter.
- Optional, pour the whipped hot cocoa cream into a ziplock bag.
- Add whipped hot cocoa cream to the top of the hot milk.
Pro Tip: You can use a spoon or a ziplock bag to pipe the whipped cream atop the milk. - Optional: Garnish your whipped hot chocolate with mini marshmallows, chocolate sauce, and sprinkles.
- Enjoy while it’s hot!
Tips
- Chill the bowl and beaters before adding the ingredients since cream whips best when cold. I like to put the bowl and beaters in the freezer for about 15 minutes to ensure they are super cold.
- I used a very good quality hot cocoa mix that I bought in a multi-serving size bag (Ghirardelli Double Chocolate 10.5 ounces) for this recipe to make multiple whipped hot chocolates. You can get the individual packets (different brands can range in size from 1.25-ounce-1.38-ounce packets), and you will just use the entire packet mixed with the heavy cream and powdered sugar and follow the recipe.
- How dark your topping turns out will depend on the brand of cocoa mix you are using. Some will produce a lighter topping than others.
- This makes one very large drink, so make sure that your mug is at least a 12-ounce capacity.
- Make sure you only whip the cream until soft peaks form. If you whip until stiff peaks form, the whipped part will be too heavy on top of the milk. You’ll know when the whipped cream is ready is when it starts to stiffen. Drag your finger or a spoon through it, and if it leaves an indentation (doesn’t come back together) it is ready.
- You should enjoy this whipped hot chocolate while it is still hot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Whipped Hot Chocolate is cocoa powder that’s been whipped with heavy cream and fluffed up into a whipped chocolate topping that you top over a mug of hot milk.
You cannot use Cool Whip in place of heavy cream for this recipe. It only takes a few minutes to whip up–the heavy cream (or whipping cream) is what whips up into the fluffy soft cream and makes this delicious drink extra decadent.
You can make whipped cream without an electric mixer using a whisk, but you may feel like your arm is going to fall off! It’s much easier to use an electric mixer whether it’s a stand mixer, hand mixer or immersion blender.
Feel free to use any milk you like for this recipe! You can substitute dairy milk with your favorite milk alternative, like almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk. It’s the biggest part of the drink so make sure it’s a milk you like!
