This Margarita By The Gallon recipe makes preparing the classic tequila cocktail in a big batch a breeze! Instead of measuring out the tequila, lime juice, triple sec, and agave syrup for each individual drink, you can easily make a much quicker cocktail in a one gallon container for a crowd.

Margaritas For A Crowd

Making Margaritas By The Gallon takes the traditional tequila and triple sec cocktail, adds tangy fresh lime juice, some sweet agave syrup, and shakes it all together in a gallon size jug.

Whether you’re yearning for a single-size boozy beverage (sometimes called a BORG – Black Out Rage Gallon – often seen at tailgates or college fraternity parties) or entertaining a large group of guests, this make-ahead margarita recipe is just as easy to make a glass for one as it is to create cocktails for a crowd.

For times when you have a house full of friends, preparing individual cocktails can be time consuming; that’s why I prefer to prepare pre-batched beverages, so all I have to do is add all of my ingredients into an empty gallon jug, give it a shake, and store it in the fridge until I’m ready to serve.

Tangy and smooth with a hint of sweet orange, this refreshing adult beverage is the best way to beat the summer heat and humidity – now there’s no need to sweat over mixing single servings because you can make one big jug of pre-mixed margaritas for the party!

Why We Love This One Gallon Margarita Recipe

Margarita By The Gallon ingredients

Margarita By The gallon Ingredients

  • Tequila: Choose a silver tequila that is 100% agave, something like Don Julio, or Casamigos Blanco.
  • Fresh lime juice: The secret to a cleaner-tasting, more refreshing margarita is using freshly squeezed lime juice (or lemon juice) for this recipe.
  • Cointreau or triple sec: Triple Sec, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier are all great orange liqueur options.
  • Agave syrup
  • Oranges
  • Limes

Substitutions and Additions

  • Cut The Calories: To make a skinny margarita with less calories and carbs, you can leave out the agave syrup to reduce the sugar content.
  • Skip Or Swap The Sweetener: I use agave syrup in this recipe because it is a natural sweetener. It’s the base ingredient fermented to make tequila so it naturally complements the cocktail. If you want to swap the agave, simple syrup or honey are great options. However, you can skip the added sweetener altogether to make this a healthier, skinny margarita.
  • Make A Margarita Mocktail: To make a virgin margarita, use a non-alcoholic triple sec and leave out the tequila for the perfect summer cocktail that all ages can enjoy.

  • Gallon milk jug (cleaned out of course) or just a gallon pitcher.

How To Rim A Margarita Glass

The trick to adding a rim to a margarita is simple! Simply pour some coarse salt on a plate. Then, cut a lime into wedges and rub the wet part against the rim of the glass in a circular motion. Dip the glass upside down into the salt and carefully press down.

  1. Make sure to use light agave syrup. I used dark agave and my margaritas are an unpleasant brown color. Also 6 cups of tequila is two bottles, plus a bottle of triple sec or Cointreau and these are kick your ass strong!
