How to Make Hamburger Hash
Our Hamburger Hash is a super easy recipe to make, and it only requires one pot to boil the potatoes and one skillet for the rest of the cooking. Which means, it’s just as easy to clean up as it is to make!
Boil potatoes in water until tender, drain and set aside.
Pro-Tip 1: When first cooking the potatoes you want them to be tender, but not too soft/mushy. It usually takes about 5-7 minutes to cook them.
Cook ground beef until browned.
Fry onions and potatoes with Italian seasoning, garlic, salt and pepper in vegetable oil.
Toss well to evenly coat potatoes and onions in seasoning.
Cook until potatoes and onions have started to brown.
Pro-Tip 2: When browning the potatoes and onions, make sure to stir the mixture often! This step will usually take about 5 minutes to cook.
Add ground beef back to the skillet and stir well to mix.
Add cheese and stir until melted.
Remove from heat and serve hot.
Variations / Options / Add-ins
- CHEESE: You can use any type of cheese that you prefer. I love the punch of sharp cheddar, but you could use mild cheddar instead. I have also used mozzarella and it was delicious! Another option for the spice lovers out there is to use pepper jack cheese.
- VEGETABLES: A delicious variation to this recipe is to add in your favorite veggies! I love to add mushrooms and peppers with the sauteed onions. Adding canned or frozen corn is also super delicious!
Frequently Asked Questions
Yep! Hamburger Hash can easily be made into a CrockPot meal.
To do so, place your browned hamburger and cooked onion in the slow cooker with your uncooked potatoes and seasonings. Top with shredded cheese and cook on low for 3 hours, or until the potatoes are tender.
Hamburger hash is great when served with fried or scrambled eggs for breakfast. It’s also delicious for a quick weeknight dinner. For dinner, I like to serve this with a crunchy vegetable side like these Feta and Bacon Green Beans or a refreshing salad side dish like these Wedge Salad Skewers.
You should store leftover hamburger hash in a sealed food storage container in the fridge for 4-5 days. This is super delicious as leftovers. We usually heat it up and make some fresh eggs to have for breakfast the second day in a row.
That is if there is even anything left! It’s so delicious that it usually gets gobbled up on the first day.

Hamburger Hash
Ingredients
- 3 medium russet potatoes peeled and chopped into bite-sized pieces
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 medium white onion diced
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 2 tsp minced garlic
- 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp cracked black pepper
- 2½ cups cheddar cheese shredded sharp
Instructions
- Boil potatoes in water until tender but not too soft/mushy (about 5-7 minutes). Drain water then set potatoes aside.
- In a large (32cm) non-stick skillet over high heat, cook ground beef until browned. Drain off fat. Put cooked beef in a separate bowl and set aside.
- In the same skillet (now empty) over medium heat, fry together vegetable oil, onion, potatoes, Italian seasoning, minced garlic, salt and pepper. Toss well to evenly coat potatoes and onions in seasoning. Cook (stirring often) until potatoes and onions have started to brown (about 5 minutes).
- Add ground beef back to the skillet and stir well to mix. Add cheese and stir until melted.
- Remove from heat. Serve hot.
- Store leftovers in a sealed food storage container in the fridge for 4-5 days.
Ditch the cheese. Not everything has to have cheese on it. Then add the egg on top that hash is supposed to have on it.
