Better Than Anything Cake Recipe

Our Better Than Sex Cake recipe is moist, rich, and ridiculously easy to bake – it turns a box cake mix into a deliciously decadent, bold-named dessert. What makes this the best, though, is that there’s pudding in the batter, so it bakes as a thick chocolate base that’s perfect for poking and infusing with flavor.

So, does this dessert live up to its name? Let’s discuss … The layer of condensed milk and caramel sauce pool in the poked holes to make it extra moist; then it’s covered in a fluffy whipped topping, a drizzle of caramel, and a sprinkle of toffee and chocolate on top.

While this may not be a family-friendly name for a chocolate poke cake that tastes better than (fill in the blank), feel free to call it Better Than Anything Cake, Better Than You Know What Cake, Almost Heaven Cake, Robert Redford Cake, to name a few for those who prefer a bit more modesty.

What Is Better Than Sex Cake

Better Than Sex Cake, or simply called BTS Cake, is a delicious and indulgent dessert known for its rich, multi-layered flavors. It typically starts with a base of moist chocolate cake, poked with holes and soaked with a mixture of sweetened condensed milk and caramel sauce. The cake is then topped with a fluffy whipped topping and finished with a sprinkle of crushed toffee or candy bars, often Heath bars, for an irresistible crunch.

Variations of Better Than Sex Cake You Can Try

While the classic version features chocolate, caramel, and toffee, creative cooks have developed numerous variations over the years:

  • Strawberry Better Than Sex Cake: Uses strawberry cake, sweetened condensed milk, fresh strawberries, and whipped topping.
  • Pineapple Coconut Version: Made with yellow cake, crushed pineapple, coconut cream, and shredded coconut.
  • Peanut Butter Twist: Incorporates peanut butter cups, peanut butter sauce, and chocolate cake.
  • Pumpkin Spice Edition: Features spiced cake, caramel drizzle, and autumn-inspired toppings.

Ingredients You’ll Need for Better Than Sex Cake

Better than sex cake ingredient.
  • Chocolate fudge cake mix: Feel free to use your favorite chocolate cake mix flavor. Other chocolate options include Devil’s Food cake mix, German chocolate cake mix, Perfectly Moist Triple Chocolate cake mix, or Double Chocolate cake mix. You can also try this with a recipe with spice cake mix, yellow cake mix, white cake mix, or your own homemade cake recipe.
  • Chocolate pudding: You can use a different flavored pudding mix to alter the taste of the cake slightly. Vanilla or white chocolate will also taste delicious.
  • Milk: I used whole milk, but you can also use 2%. I haven’t tried using a milk substitute for this recipe, but it should also work.
  • Vegetable oil
  • Eggs
  • Sweetened and condensed milk
  • Caramel sauce: You can replace this with caramel ice cream topping, homemade salted caramel sauce, butterscotch sauce, hot fudge sauce, chocolate sauce, or any other type of sweet sauce/topping that you like.
  • Whipped topping: Cool Whip or a homemade whipped cream using heavy cream and powdered sugar can also be used.
  • Toffee bits
  • Chocolate bar: I used a Hershey’s milk chocolate bar, but you can substitute the chocolate with your favorite type of chocolate or chocolate chips. Many candy bars, like Heath bars, Reese’s peanut butter cups, Snickers, Butterfingers, or 100 Grand, have similar taste and texture.

Step-by-Step: How to Make Better Than Sex Cake

  1. Make The Cake Batter: Combine the chocolate cake mix, pudding mix, milk, oil, and eggs in a large bowl. Pour the cake batter into the pan.
  2. Bake The Batter: Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean in the center.
  3. Poke And Pour: Poke holes throughout the cake, allow it to cool, then pour the condensed milk on top, letting it pool in the poked holes. Pour caramel sauce over the condensed milk and cover with whipped topping.
  4. Decorate The Dessert: Drizzle the remaining caramel sauce across the whipped topping and sprinkle with toffee bits and chopped chocolate.
  5. Serve: Chill uncovered in the refrigerator for 1 hour. Slice and serve cold. Enjoy!
Poke holes in chocolate cake, drizzle with caramel and condensed milk, spread whipped topping, and finish with more caramel drizzle.

Serving Suggestions

Serve your poke cake straight from the refrigerator to enhance the taste and texture. The longer the cake cools and rests in the fridge, the more flavorful it’ll become. Whether prepared for birthday parties, holidays, or casual gatherings, this dessert never fails to be the star of the show!

Dress up your cake with an extra dollop of whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate or caramel sauce on each slice. Or, for more ideas, check out my other poke cake combinations.

Tips & Variations

  • Poke And Pour: When pouring the sweetened condensed milk and caramel sauce, aim directly into the poked holes until they are all filled. That way, the yummy liquid will penetrate all of the cake. After filling the holes, you can pour the remaining liquid evenly on the top of the cake.
  • How To Poke Holes: If you don’t have a chopstick, the handle of a wooden spoon or a plastic spoon will also work. You can also use a smooth handle of a spoon or fork if you are in a pinch. Remember not to poke your holes all the way down through the cake or you may end up with liquid pooled at the bottom instead of soaked into the cake itself. You should only poke the holes about ⅔ of the way down.
  • Trust The Poke Process: Your holes will empty after a bit. This is totally normal as the liquids are absorbed into the cake. Once you add the whipped topping, they will all be covered, and your cake will look as delicious as it tastes!
  • Tasty Toppings: You can add almost any of your favorite toppings to this cake! Chop up some Reese’s peanut butter cups, Skor bars, Snickers, Oreos, Heath candy bars, or Symphony bars with toffee.

Storage Tips

  • Make Ahead: You can bake the chocolate cake up to 1 week ahead of time. Allow it to cool completely, cover it well, and store it in the fridge for a week or longer in the freezer. When you are ready to make the cake, thaw it if frozen, poke the holes, and continue following the instructions.
  • To Store: Cover your cake with plastic wrap and place leftovers in the refrigerator. It will be good for up to a week, but don’t let it sit too long, or it might dry out or get too soggy.
  • To Freeze: To freeze, individually wrap slices with plastic wrap and keep them in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator. The texture of the cake that has been frozen may change.

Better Than Sex Cake

Serves — 18
Better Than Sex Cake is an easy way to transform a basic box of cake mix into a decadent dessert. What could be better than a classic poke cake, infused with flavor, covered in whipped cream, and topped with candy?
Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Chill Time 1 hour 30 minutes
Total Time 2 hours 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 15.25 ounce box chocolate fudge cake mix
  • 3.1 ounce box chocolate pudding
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 14 ounce can sweetened and condensed milk
  • ¾ cup caramel sauce divided
  • 8 ounce tub whipped topping
  • ½ cup toffee bits
  • ½ cup chopped chocolate bar (I used Hershey's)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and spray a 9×13 inch cake pan with cooking spray.
  • In a large bowl, stir the chocolate fudge cake mix, pudding mix, milk, vegetable oil, and large eggs together until fully combined.
  • Pour the prepared cake batter into the 9×13 inch cake pan and bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean in the center.
  • Remove the cake from the oven and use the bottom of a chopstick or a wooden spoon to poke holes throughout the cake, about ⅔ of the way down. Make sure holes don’t go through the bottom of the cake.
  • Allow the cake to cool for 20-30 minutes.
  • After the cake has cooled, pour the sweetened and condensed milk all over the cake, letting it pool in the poked holes.
  • Pour ½ cup of the divided caramel sauce over the condensed milk.
  • Gently spread the whipped topping all over the top of the cooled cake into an even layer.
  • Drizzle the rest of the divided caramel sauce into simple zig zags across the whipped topping.
  • Sprinkle the toffee bits and chopped chocolate evenly on top.
  • Place, uncovered, in the refrigerator for 1 hour to cool completely. Cut, plate, and serve cold.
