Bite Sized Caramel Apple Slices

Caramel Apple Slices are simple to make and easy to eat; they’re a bite-sized version of the classic carnival snack, but served on a platter instead of a stick (although you certainly can make them portable by preparing them like lollipops).

This recipe for caramel apple slices starts by coating each piece in melted chocolate, then they’re drizzled with caramel and decorated with your favorite toppings to make them look festive and fancy.

I love this Fall dessert – the pairing of crisp apples and sweet, soft chocolate and caramel covering – it’s the perfect combination of taste and texture.

Making apple caramel slices is a fun family activity where everyone can create their own custom sliced apples with caramel, chocolate, cookies, and candy.

Why We Love This Caramel Covered Apple Slices Recipe

  • Quick and easy to make in 10 minutes.
  • Only uses 3 ingredients plus water and optional toppings.
  • Make less messy caramel apple slices on a stick by preparing them like a lollipop or popsicle.
  • Caramel-covered apple slices are the perfect canvas for your decorating creativity.
  • Serving slices is easier than eating an entire caramel apple.
  • Perfect for Halloween parties, Thanksgiving dessert, fall celebrations, or a semi-healthy snack.

Ingredients

  • Granny smith apples
  • Dark chocolate chips
  • Caramel squares
  • Water

Substitutions and Additions

  • Tasty Toppings: Chocolate-coated apple slices are so much fun to decorate. Get creative and top your caramel drizzle with mini chocolate chips, M&Ms, sprinkles, crushed Oreos, chopped nuts, melted white chocolate, mini marshmallows, shredded coconut, or any of your favorites.
  • Choose Your Chocolate: If you want a bit more sweetness you can use milk chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate chips, or even white chocolate chips. Be especially careful when melting white chocolate chips in the microwave because if they are overheated they seize quickly.
  • Pick Your Produce: I love using crispy tart Granny Smith apples for this recipe because it pairs perfectly with sweet chocolate and caramel. However, feel free to use a soft, sweet apple if you prefer the flavor combination. Some ideas include Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, and Fuji.

How to Make Caramel Apple Slices

  1. Prepare Your Produce: Slice the apples about ¼ an inch thick and pat them dry between 2 paper towels. Firmly insert a candy sucker stick up into the apple. You may want to use a knife to make a small hole to help insert it.
  2. Cover In Chocolate: Microwave the chocolate chips for 30 seconds. Stir, and heat again in 10-15 second increments until melted. Pat the apple slices dry and then dip each one in the melted chocolate. Remove any excess chocolate and then place the coated slices on the baking sheet to set.
  3. Drizzle With Caramel: Microwave the caramel bits and water for 30 seconds, stir, and if necessary, heat for 10-15 seconds until melted. Drizzle the caramel over the chocolate coated apples.
  4. Decorate: Immediately place any toppings over the caramel and chill in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes or until set.
  5. Serve: Serve chilled or at room temperature. Enjoy!

Tip From Our Recipe Developer

  • Be sure to have everything prepared before you start cutting your apple slices. You want to have any toppings set out and ready plus all your ingredients waiting so that your apples don’t turn brown while waiting to be dipped.
  • To help to prevent the apple slices from browning you can brush the exposed apple with a little lemon juice or lime juice and they will stay fresh for a few hours.
  • Be prepared to put the toppings on while the caramel is still hot. I recommend dipping all of the apples in the chocolate and then individually decorating them with caramel and toppings. Don’t put the caramel on all of the slices before putting on the toppings or it may harden enough that the toppings don’t stick.
  • To switch things up you can actually put the toppings on the coated apples while the chocolate is still hot and soft and put the caramel drizzle on AFTER the toppings. This will ensure your toppings stick well and give your slices a unique look.

How to Keep the Chocolate on the Apple Slices

The key to keep that chocolate on the apple slices is to make sure you are slicing the apples thick enough and that you are coating the chocolate completely over the apple slice. If you leave even a small section the apple juices will leak out and the chocolate will not stay on the apple slice.

Storage

  • To Store: Caramel Apple Slices can be kept at room temperature for several hours. For longer storage, place your apple slices in the refrigerator in an airtight container or plastic bag.
  • To Freeze: I do not recommend freezing these apple slices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is The Best Type Of Apple To Use For caramel apples?

You can make these Caramel Apple Slices with any type of apple you prefer, but I think a tart apple, like Granny Smith, tastes best with chocolate and caramel.

How Do I Keep The Caramel From Sliding Off Apple Slices?

My secret for keeping the caramel from slipping off the apple slices is to start with chocolate-covered apple slices. If you put the caramel straight on the apple slice, it will slide right off. You want to drizzle the caramel directly onto the chocolate coating so it has something to stick to.

How to store caramel apple slices

These apple slices can be kept at room temperature for several hours but if they are stored any longer than that they should be kept in the refrigerator in an airtight container or plastic bag. They can be individually wrapped in plastic wrap before being stored in the refrigerator to keep them from sticking to each other. I do not recommend freezing these slices as the apples do not thaw well.

What Toppings Can I use On Caramel Apples?

Get creative with these Caramel Apple Slices–there is practically no limit to the type of toppings you can use. You can make Zebra Apple Slices by using some melted white chocolate as a drizzle instead of the caramel or make a Turtle Caramel Apple Slice by adding chopped pecans to the chocolate before drizzling on the caramel. You can use chopped candy bars as toppings, pretzels, or anything else that sounds good!

Caramel Apple Slices

Serves — 6
Caramel Apple Slices are easy to eat and fun for the whole family to make together with any toppings! Crisp apples are coated in sweet chocolate and chewy caramel with your favorite festive toppings.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Chill Time 15 minutes
Total Time 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 Granny smith apples
  • 2 cups dark chocolate chips divided
  • 1 cup caramel squares
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • Mini chocolate chips, M&Ms, Sprinkles, Crushed Oreos, Chopped nuts, Melted white chocolate Optional toppings

Instructions

  • Prepare 1 or 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Slice the apples into full slices, not wedges, about ¼ an inch thick. Firmly insert a candy sucker stick into the bottom of the apple. You may want to use a knife to make a small hole to help insert it. Place them on a paper towel.
  • Place a second paper towel on top of the apple slices and pat them dry.
  • In a shallow, microwave safe bowl, place 1 cup of the dark chocolate chips and heat it for 30 seconds in the microwave.
  • Stir the chips well and microwave again in 10-15 second increments, stirring between each until the chips are fully melted.
  • Pat the apple slices dry once more with a paper towel and then dip them one by one in the melted chocolate until fully coated. (coat them a little past the base of the stick). You can also spoon the chocolate onto the apple, just be sure to fully cover it. If you leave any exposed apple the juices will make the chocolate not adhear as well.
  • Gently scrape off excess chocolate and then place the coated apple slice on the prepared baking sheet to set.
  • Repeat with each apple slice until they are all coated. When you run out of chocolate, repeat steps 4-5 with the remaining chocolate chips.
  • In a second, shallow, microwave safe bowl place the caramel bits and water and microwave for 30 seconds.
  • Stir the caramel and water together and, if necessary, continue to microwave for 10-15 seconds before removing and stirring well. Repeat until the caramel is completely melted.
  • Use a spoon or fork to drizzle the caramel over the chocolate coated apples in any pattern or design you choose.
  • Immediately place any toppings on top of the caramel and then place the slices in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes or until set.

    1. what do you suggest the best method for slicing the apples? I just use a sharp knife and try to make them uniform. I wondered if there was an awesome kitchen gadget to add to my collection. 😆 Thanks for the recipe!

  1. Caramel bits? Are you using wrapped caramel squares or are the bits in bag in baking aisle like chocolate chips?
The word bits is throwing me off but pic shows wrapped caramels. Not sure what bits are?
    Thank you!

    1. Sorry for the confusion – You want to use the individually wrapped caramels that you see in the pictures. I will adjust the wording!

  2. My question is you dip apple with core in it? Or could you it coreoutn fill with chocolate first then fully dip in chocolate? I dunno I just don’t wanna run into core in the yummy treat.
