I make this boozy orange creamsicle milkshake all summer long, and it tastes like the orange creamsicle pops I chased the ice cream truck for as a kid. It is thick and creamy, with bright orange flavor, smooth vanilla, and just enough of a kick to make it a grown-up treat.

This is one of my favorite warm-weather drinks because it comes together in about five minutes and tastes like a childhood dessert made for adults. I pull it out for backyard nights, summer parties, and any hot evening when I want something cold and a little fun.

What makes this one work is the base. Frozen vanilla ice cream and orange sherbet blend up thick and creamy instead of thin and watery, and the orange-to-vanilla balance is dialed in so it actually tastes like a creamsicle. The pour of vodka is measured to give it a kick without thinning it out.

If you love a cold boozy drink, my boozy strawberry milkshake is another easy one to keep on hand. And if you want the same flavor in dessert form, my orange creamsicle pie hits the same nostalgic note.

Tested & Perfected. I went back and retested the orange-to-vanilla balance and the amount of vodka so the shake stays thick and creamy. Too much liquor was thinning it out and turning it icy, so I dialed the vodka back to the amount that keeps it rich and still gives you that boozy kick.

The one thing i always tell people

Skip the ice. It is the fastest way to ruin this shake.

Ice melts as you sip and waters down the orange and vanilla until the whole thing tastes flat and thin. A base of frozen vanilla ice cream and orange sherbet is what makes this milkshake thick, creamy, and full of flavor from the first sip to the last.

The same goes for the alcohol. A little vodka adds the kick, but too much thins the shake and turns it icy. I keep the pour measured so it stays creamy.

What You’ll Need

  • Vanilla ice cream. This is the creamy backbone of the shake and the vanilla half of that creamsicle flavor. Use a good full-fat vanilla that scoops thick, because it is what keeps the milkshake rich instead of runny.
  • Orange sherbet. This is the bright citrus side and the truest way to get real creamsicle flavor. Sherbet keeps a little creaminess, so it blends smooth instead of icy the way a sorbet would.
  • Heavy cream. A small pour adds richness and helps everything blend without watering it down the way milk or ice would.
  • Whipped cream vodka. This carries the boozy kick while staying right on the vanilla and orange flavor. Keep the amount measured, because too much will thin the shake and make it icy.

How to Make a Boozy Orange Creamsicle Milkshake

Step 1: Add the frozen base. Place 2 cups vanilla ice cream and 2 cups orange sherbet in a blender. Starting with both frozen is what gives you a thick, creamy shake.

Step 2: Pour in the liquids. Add 1/4 cup heavy cream and 2 ounces whipped cream vodka right on top.
add the ice cream in the blender.

Step 3: Blend and serve. Blend until smooth and creamy, then stop. Over-blending warms the shake and thins it out. Pour into glasses right away and top with whipped cream and orange sprinkles.

Pick Your Alcohol

Whipped cream vodka is what I reach for, and it keeps the drink right on that vanilla and orange flavor. It is what I use every time.

If you want to try something else, vanilla vodka, plain vodka, or an orange liqueur like Grand Marnier or Triple Sec are all common swaps. I have not tested those in this recipe, so treat them as a starting point and taste as you go.

Make It for the Kids Too

Leave out the vodka and this becomes a creamsicle milkshake the whole family can have. Everything else stays exactly the same, so you can blend a boozy batch for the adults and a kid-friendly batch in the same five minutes.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Adjust the thickness to your liking. For a thicker shake, add a little more vanilla ice cream and orange sherbet. For a thinner one, add a splash more heavy cream.

Do not over-blend. Blend only until smooth. The longer it runs, the more it warms up and loses that thick, frozen texture.

Chill your glasses first. A few minutes in the freezer keeps the shake cold and thick longer once you pour it in.

Boozy Orange Creamsicle Milkshake FAQ

Can I make this ahead of time?

This one is best blended and served fresh. It does not hold or store well, because it melts and separates as it sits. Make it right when you are ready to drink it.

Can I double the recipe?

Yes. The recipe as written makes 2 servings, so double or triple it for a crowd. If you are making a big batch, blend it in batches so everything stays thick and smooth.
