The Best Family Friendly Halloween Shows! Netflix and what we are watching now!
I’m not sure how, but Halloween is almost here. That means pumpkins, costumes, ghoulishly good snacks, and, of course, some of our favorite Halloween shows. My kids are way too young for horror movies and the likes of Freddy Krueger, but they do like a good, spooky mystery. Thankfully, Netflix has us covered with on-demand, family friendly Halloween shows.
From full-length features to shorter shows, there’s something for everyone. The best part? They’re just the right combination of fun and mystery to keep the kids entertained without being overly scary or giving them nightmares. Check out our top five parent and kid-approved, family friendly Halloween shows!
THE BEST Family Friendly Halloween Shows
The Nightmare Before Christmas
To be honest, we watch The Nightmare Before Christmas from mid-October through December. It’s a family favorite! The movie is the perfect blend of slightly creepy characters for a Halloween feel and a story that’s timeless. Although the movie came out in 1993, it’s still a hit with kids 5 to 10 years old – not to mention their parents!
Spooky Buddies
Starring the same adorable canines that are in Snow Buddies and Super Buddies, Spooky Buddies is the Halloween tale of a group of dogs who bravely check out a haunted house. It makes my kids laugh every time (especially when the sheriff turns into a monkey!) and I like that it’s not very scary. It’s a fun, lighthearted Halloween movie and I’m glad Netflix has it available this year.
Casper’s Scare School
Casper is the perfect character to make Halloween fun and a lot less scary. In the movie, this adorable little ghost is on a mission to toughen up and heads off to scare school where he gets into quite a scandal. Although it’s rated TV-Y7, take a look at it, because your younger kids might like it too.
Vampire Dog
We discovered this 90-minute movie one day when my oldest was home sick with the sniffles. It’s an adorable movie with a Halloween twist thanks to a slightly off-beat, 600 year old dog. Needless to say, we’re pushovers for any movie with cute dogs!
DreamWorks Spooky Stories: Volume 2
We love the monsters in DreamWorks movies, so when we discovered the Spooky Stories we were thrilled! I love that they’re four short episodes between 7-16 minutes long, but can also be watched in one longer show. There are two Monsters vs. Aliens episodes, one with Megamind, and a short, funny one from Shrek.
More Family Friendly Halloween Shows for Kids
Other Halloween movies and shows that we’ve watched when looking for family friendly Halloween shows include:
- Coraline
- Goosebumps – We found the shows to be way too scary for our young kids, but older children would probably enjoy them!
- Corpse Bride
- Hotel Transylvania 2
- The Worst Witch – This is a series of shows that are about 30-minutes long. They’re a bit too old for our youngest, but would be great for older kids.
- HIT Children’s Favorites: Halloween Treats
Halloween Snacks
If you’re looking for a great snack to go along with your Halloween binge watching, I highly recommend this Pumpkin Spice Snack Mix. My kids devour it! If you’re looking for something without a lot of candy corn, try the Cyclops Kabobs instead. They’re a stick full of fruity goodness and my kids gobble them up without even realizing they’re super healthy. Fruit made into characters is always a good option!

I am very excited to be a member of the Netflix Stream Team! That’s right – I am a lucky girl – Netflix provides me with their amazing streaming services and I get to tell my kids “sorry, I can’t help you right now, I am working”, while watching The Crown!! #STREAMTEAM
