What Are Yogurt Melts?

Yogurt melts are small, bite-sized snacks made by freezing a mixture of yogurt and fruit or vegetable puree. They are a popular choice among parents because they’re nutritious, easy to prepare, and perfect for little ones learning to self-feed. It’s a great snack for both new eaters and teething toddlers.

These yogurt melts for babies and toddlers are completely customizable; tailor them to suit their taste, age, or dietary requirements. Plus, their texture is soft enough to dissolve from natural heat on the tongue, making them a safe tool for toddlers to practice their pincer grasp, without making a mess!

Why Make DIY Yogurt Melts at Home?

Forget the freeze-dried yogurt melts from the store and make your own at home. When you provide your babies and toddlers with healthier, more personalized snacks, you know exactly what goes into their food. As a parent, wouldn’t you want your child to eat the freshest, preservative-free snack made with wholesome ingredients?

Store-bought yogurt melts can be pricey for the small quantity provided. Homemade yogurt melts are budget-friendly and a sustainable option because you skip the plastic packaging.

Ingredients for Homemade Yogurt Melts

Baby Yogurt Melts ingredients.
  • Whole milk Greek plain yogurt: There are many brands of greek yogurt on the market. Some have slightly different consistencies or flavors. Choose a brand that is thicker in consistency such as FAGE or Chobani brand. You can also use a plant-based, dairy-free yogurt if you prefer, but remember that you need a thick yogurt for this recipe to work. A thick coconut yogurt or soy yogurt can make a great dairy-free alternative.
  • Baby food puree: Be sure to choose a baby fruit puree (single fruit or fruit blend) that is 100% pure fruit only. Depending on the fruit flavors you choose, the color of the melts will vary. You can make your melts using different flavors of store-bought or homemade baby puree.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these snacks as a soothing tool to ease teething discomfort, or a cool and refreshing, delicious snack! They’re a great source of calcium, probiotics, and essential nutrients needed to support healthy growth.

Yogurt melts are great as a side to lunch, an easy snack, or to grab as an on-the-go treat, but just because they’re kid-friendly doesn’t mean adults won’t love them, too! But if you’re looking for something shelf-stable, my baby trail mix is just as delicious, but it’s made with freeze-dried fruit, puffs, and cereal so it won’t spoil.

Tips For Making Homemade Yogurt Melts

  • Make A Veggie Version: Baby 100% pure vegetable purees can also be used to make these baby yogurt melts. I suggest sticking with sweeter, milder vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, or butternut squash. The flavor of the sweeter vegetables combined with the Greek yogurt tastes more pleasing than vegetables such as green beans or spinach.
  • Stir Or Spill: If your Greek yogurt has settled and the liquid is on the surface, stir the liquids back into the yogurt or simply pour off the excess. This will ensure that when the fruit puree is mixed into the yogurt, it is a thick enough consistency to be piped and frozen for these baby yogurt melts.
  • Form Different Flavors: You can make a variety of different flavors and pipe them all onto one large, parchment paper lined baking sheet to freeze at once. This will give your baby a variety of flavors and colors to enjoy.
  • Serving Size: Depending on the age of your child, you can pipe small drops or larger dime-sized circles onto the tray before freezing. The size of your melts will determine more or less total servings.

Variations of Yogurt Melts to Try

One of the best parts about a DIY yogurt melt recipe is the endless flavor possibilities! By mixing yogurt with different fruit or vegetable purees, you can create a variety of nutritious combinations custom to your child’s preferences.

  • Create The Classics: Stick with the classic fruit flavors by mixing plain yogurt with purred strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, bananas, or pear.
  • Serve Seasonal Snacks: Blend plain yogurt with pumpkin puree or sweet potato puree and a pinch of cinnamon for a fall-inspired snack.
  • Get In The Greens: Combine plain yogurt with spinach and unsweetened applesauce for an extra boost of calcium.

Storage Tips for Homemade Yogurt Melts

These baby yogurt freezer melts can be kept frozen for up to 2 months in a lidded, freezer-safe, airtight container. Feed the desired amount of melts to your child, then return the container to the freezer until the next use. I like to let these sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving from frozen so they have a chance to soften a bit.
