I love how easy this mix is to make – just toss everything together, pour on the melted almond bark, and let it set. It’s great for parties, road trips, or just keeping a jar on the counter for snacking. The best part is how easy it is to switch up the candy or mix-ins to fit whatever you’re craving.

Ingredients Notes

White Trash ingredients.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this classic trash chex mix: The full recipe card can be found below with detailed measurements and instructions.

  • Corn CHEX cereal – You can swap with Rice CHEX for a lighter texture or any other type of Chex cereal.
  • Cheerios cereal – use original or Honey Nut Cheerios for a hint of sweetness.
  • Mini pretzel twists – Any shape pretzel will work, I just prefer the mini twists.
  • Dry roasted salted peanuts – you can substitute pecans or cashews, or leave them out for a nut-free mix.
  • M&M candies – regular or holiday-colored M&M’s make it festive and fun, just like in my Christmas Chex Mix.
  • Vanilla almond bark candy coating – melts smoothly for perfect coverage; white chocolate chips, melting wafers, or candy melts work too.

Recipe Variations

Holiday Christmas Trash Recipe: Use red and green M&M’s or festive sprinkles to make a Christmas trash recipe with almond bark, or switch it up for Halloween with candy corn and orange sprinkles for a spooky twist.

Nut-Free Version: Skip the peanuts and add extra pretzels or cereal for a crunchy, allergen-friendly snack.

Snack Trash Recipe with Pecans: Swap peanuts for pecans to give the mix a buttery, rich flavor.

Extra Crunch: Add popcorn, Reese’s Pieces, crushed candy, cookie chunks, potato chips (my personal favorite) or crushed pretzel rods for even more texture and flavor—anything crunchy works!

How do I keep my chocolate snack mix from getting soggy?

Make sure the almond bark coating is fully hardened before storing, and keep the mix in a dry, airtight container at room temperature. Avoid the fridge or the freezer — the moisture can soften the cereal and cause the M&M’s to discolor.

Recipe Tips

  • Use a large mixing bowl so it’s easy to coat the dry ingredients evenly.
  • Melt the almond bark slowly, stirring frequently to keep it smooth and prevent clumping.
  • Work quickly once the coating is melted since it starts to set fast.
  • Let it cool completely before breaking apart to get that perfect crunchy texture.
  • Package it in jars or cellophane bags for a great holiday gift idea.

Make Ahead & Storage Instructions

  • Make Ahead: This smacl mix can be prepared up to 2 weeks in advance, making it perfect for gifting or holiday parties.
  • Store: Keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
  • Reheat: No reheating needed — just serve and enjoy straight from the container.
  • Freeze: Not recommended, as moisture can cause the cereal to soften and the candy coating to discolor.

I have been making this for years! I would use different color M&M’s for different occasions. Easter colors for Easter. Orange, brown, and yellow for fall, Red and green for Christmas!
