Simply Delicious Drunken Dalgona

A Drunken Dalgona recipe may have similarities to a Whipped Coffee that began as a non-alcoholic Tik Tok trend, but this revised coffee creation alters that original viral sip with a few simple supplements!

Instant coffee, sugar, and water are quickly whipped together until fluffy caffeinated clouds are formed and then spooned over milk that’s been spiked!

This boozy version of a dalgona is a delicious coffee cocktail that you can enjoy cold or hot and with simple substitutions, you can make your own custom cup of clouded coffee. Adding a shot (or two) of peanut butter whiskey and vanilla vodka is the perfect way to get the buzz going and the best combination of booze and caffeine!

Why We Love This Skrewball Cocktail

  • Quick and easy to make in only 5 minutes.
  • Only uses 6 simple ingredients.
  • Delicious coffee cocktail that can be enjoyed cold or hot.
  • Fun way to combine booze and caffeine.

Ingredients / Shopping List

  • Whole milk: Make sure your milk is very cold.
  • Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey: If you can not find this brand in your area, you can use any brand flavored peanut butter whiskey.
  • Vanilla vodka
  • Granulated sugar
  • Very hot water
  • Instant coffee granules

Substitutions and Additions

  • Vegan Version: I used whole milk for this recipe but feel free to use any non-dairy milk you prefer. I think that the full fat versions work best no matter what “milk” option you choose. Feel free to try Oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, or any of your favorite plant-based varieties.
  • Coffee/Sugar Combo: You can substitute instant espresso or raw cane sugar. Note that if you use the instant espresso, your whipped coffee will be much stronger than a traditional regular instant coffee and the raw cane sugar will not whip up quite as full as the granulated sugar. However, either of these substitutions will still make a great Drunken Dalgona!
  • Alternate Alcohol: You can use a good unflavored whiskey (I like to use Jameson Irish whiskey for my coffee cocktails) in lieu of the Skrewball brand and a peanut butter flavored schnapps in lieu of the vanilla vodka.
  • Mixer
  • 12 ounce coffee mug
  • Measuring tools
  • Mixing bowl

  1. Pour milk, whiskey, and vodka into a large mug and set aside.

  2. Whip together hot water, instant coffee, and sugar with a mixer.
Pro Tip: Begin mixing on medium speed for 30 seconds and then increase the speed to high for an additional 4 ½-5 minutes or until fluffy and stiff peaks form. If you don’t have a handheld mixer, you can whip the ingredients using an immersion blender or even a milk frother for individual servings. You can also use a whisk to whip it by hand but it will take you a little bit longer.

Tips

  • If you don’t have a handheld mixer, you can whip the ingredients using an immersion blender or even a milk frother for individual servings. You can also use a whisk to whip it by hand but it will take you a little bit longer.
  • You can sip this Drunken Dalgona coffee cocktail as it is or stir it up and enjoy.
  • This drink is made as a cold cocktail but feel free to heat up your milk, follow the rest of the directions, and enjoy it as a hot coffee cocktail.
  • Make sure that you are preparing your Drunken Dalgona coffee in a large enough mug, or cocktail glass, because the whipped topping does get pretty fluffy and you want to make sure you have enough space in your mug for all the caffeine clouds.
  • I find that for single serving drinks like this, the small 50 ml. shooters that you can find at your local liquor store are perfect (a touch over the 1½ ounces in each) to use when you want to try new brands and flavors of liquors without committing to the larger bottles.

Storage Tips

  • To Store: This drink is best served immediately as the whipped topping will slowly deflate as it sits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dalgona coffee?

Dalgona means “it’s sweet” and the original South Korean coffee recipe has been spreading on social media platforms since January 2020. Dalgona coffee is a whipped, frothy iced coffee drink made with instant coffee, sugar, water, and milk. Also known as “whipped coffee”, “frothy coffee”, or “fluffy coffee”, dalgona coffee has two distinct layers made from whipped coffee cream sitting on top of milk.

What is the best milk to use for this Drunken Dalgona recipe?

I like to use whole milk for this recipe, which is super creamy and rich, but any milk will work well. You can make this drink non-dairy/vegan by using your favorite plant-based milk.

Is this a cold or a hot drink?

You can serve Drunken Dalgona either as a cold cocktail or as a hot drink. Serve it over cold milk for a cooling summer drink, or hot for a warm and cozy beverage. Either way, it tastes amazing!

Can I make my drink ahead of time?

It’s best to make this Drunken Dalgona recipe only when you are ready to enjoy it, or you will risk losing the air in the whipped coffee.

Why is my topping not whipping up into a fluffy foam?

If you skimp on the sugar, beating the coffee mixture will not only take much longer, it will also collapse very easily. Using the suggested amount of sugar will ensure that you achieve a fluffy, cloud-like foam.

Jenn’s Notes

Storage:
This drink is best served immediately as the whipped topping will slowly deflate as it sits.
Tips:
  • If you don’t have a handheld mixer, you can whip the ingredients using an immersion blender or even a milk frother for individual servings. You can also use a whisk to whip it by hand but it will take you a little bit longer.
  • I used whole milk for this recipe but feel free to use whatever dairy, or non-dairy, of your choosing. I think that the full fat versions work best no matter what “milk” option you choose.
  • Granulated sugar and regular instant coffee (with the larger granules) are what I used for this recipe to get the best results. However, you can substitute instant espresso or raw cane sugar. Note that if you use the instant espresso that your whipped coffee will be much stronger than a traditional regular instant coffee and the raw can sugar does not whip up quite as full as the granulated sugar does.  Any of these substitutions still makes a great Drunken Dalgona though.

  • Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey is the brand that I used here but if you can not find that brand in your area you can use any brand flavored peanut butter whiskey. Alternatively, you can use a good unflavored whiskey (I like to use Jameson Irish whiskey for my coffee cocktails) in lieu of the Skrewball brand and a peanut butter flavored schnapps in lieu of the vanilla vodka.
