Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs
Just the other day I was at a friend’s house and she was preparing lunch. She had a bunch of hard-boiled eggs and as she went to peel one, she immediately realized that it was not a fully cooked hard-boiled egg!
Her method of cooking eggs on the stove had failed her yet again. At that point, she had to throw the rest of the eggs out and come up with a new lunch plan.
That’s when I realized I needed to share my Instant Pot hard-boiled egg recipe with you guys! You all know I live for easy recipes, but I’m also very conscious of never wasting food, so I always share recipes that I KNOW will work! This recipe has the best of both!

Ingredients for Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

- 1 cup of water
- 4 cups of ice water
- A 6 Quart Instant Pot – a.k.a. A Busy Mom’s Best Friend!
How to Make Hard-Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot
Grab your eggs and your Instant Pot and let’s get things shaking (or boiling)!
First, make sure you place the steamer rack in your Instant Pot then go ahead and dump in the water.
Place your eggs inside in a single layer. (or you can use this (affiliate link) Instant Pot egg rack if you are making 9 or fewer eggs or this one for up to 18 eggs!
Next, place the lid back on, then lock and load! (No, seriously, lock the lid!)
Set it to steam and make sure the steam vent is sealed.
Press manual mode twice to turn off the keep warm function then set to low pressure for 10 minutes.
While the eggs are cooking, get the ice bath ready (basically a bowl of ice water). You want to have this ready so you can transfer the eggs as soon as they are done cooking in the Instant Pot. Just get a bowl large enough for a dozen eggs plus about 4 cups of cold water with ice.
Once the cook cycle is complete, open your Instant Pot valve with a quick release.
Unlock and remove the lid.
Then carefully transfer all of the eggs to your ice water bath.
Leave the eggs to cool for about 3 minutes or until they are cool enough to handle.
Then, crack open your eggs and watch the magic unfold as the shells basically slide off your perfectly cooked hard-boiled eggs!
I love this recipe so much because it’s so consistent. I never have to worry about if my eggs are going to turn out perfect or not.
It’s also great because I can make a bunch all at once which is perfect for Easter, when I want to bring deviled eggs to a party or make a big batch of egg salad, yum!
How long do hard-boiled eggs last?
Hard-boiled eggs are good to last in your fridge for up to a week!
I leave mine peeled and just write on their shells with a felt tip pen the date I boiled them so I know my family and I are safe. Although, your nose will also definitely be able to tell you if your eggs are off!
How long to hard boil eggs vs. soft boil eggs?
This is a great question and the answer is… it depends!
It depends on how soft or “runny” you like your soft boiled eggs. To start, I would try cooking them for half the time you would for hard-boiled eggs and go from there. If they’re too runny, cook them for longer, and if they’re too hard, cook them for less time.
The good thing is, once you find the perfect setting, you’ll be able to set a timer and make them that way every time, without having to wonder how they’ll turn out!
Quick-release or natural release on the Instant Pot?
For this recipe, it’s important that you use the “quick release” on your Instant Pot so you can get your eggs in the ice bath as quickly as possible, which makes them easier to peel!
Do older eggs work better when you are hard-boiling them?
My mom always said that if you want your hard-boiled eggs to turn out, older eggs are better but with the sheer magic of the Instant Pot- it really doesn’t matter!
Fresh eggs work just as well as older eggs. No matter what my eggs turn out perfect every time with this recipe!
How to easily peel hard-boiled eggs
Another amazing advantage of using the Instant Pot to make perfect hard-boiled eggs is that so easy to peel the eggs afterward!
This could be for a variety of reasons, maybe it’s the difference between steaming and boiling the eggs (apparently steaming them makes it less likely for that clear but much-hated membrane to appear) or maybe it’s thanks to the quick transfer into the ice bath.
In any case, I don’t really care why I’m just glad it works like a charm every time!
Here is my best tip for peeling hard-boiled eggs quickly and efficiently! The key is to get the majority of the shell cracked before you start peeling it off.
I’ve found that the best and fastest method is to roll the egg along the counter. Apply a little pressure- you won’t hurt it! Once you’ve cracked the majority of the shell, then it should be ready to just slide off.
How long do hard-boiled eggs last?
Hard-boiled eggs will last in the refrigerator for 1 week. They will keep for about 1 week peeled or unpeeled.
I like to store them in a ziplock bag and write the date that I made them in a sharpie on the outside of the bag. That way I will remember when they are good until!
How many eggs can I put in the instant pot?
You can put as many eggs in the instant pot as you can fit in a single layer.
