Red and blue food coloring
8ounceblock of room temperature cream cheese
10ouncepackage Ghirardelli white vanilla melting wafers
Red, white, and blue sprinkles
Instructions
Start by preheating your oven to the temperature instructed on your cake box and grease three small baking pans.
In a large mixing bowl, prepare the cake mix with the needed ingredients as instructed on the box.
1 box white cake mix and the ingredients needed for the cake
Separate the cake batter evenly into three separate small mixing bowls. Add red food coloring into the first bowl, blue into the second, and leave the third plain. Add a few drops of the food coloring at a time until desired color is reached.
Red and blue food coloring
Pour each bowl of batter into the separate prepared baking pans and bake for 14-16 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean from the center of the cake.
While the cakes are baking, beat the softened cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth and fluffy.
8 ounce block of room temperature cream cheese
Let the cakes cool completely on a wire rack. Once cooled, crumble each cake into its own medium mixing bowl.
Separate the cream cheese into thirds and place into each bowl of crumbled cake.
Mix the cream cheese completely into each bowl of cake. This can be done by hand or with an electric mixer, just make sure you clean the mixer in between each color.
Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Grab small one inch pieces of each color cake at a time and form into red white and blue cake balls. Place them on the baking sheets and let chill in the fridge for 1-2 hours.
Once the cake balls are chilled, microwave the white chocolate wafers in 30 second increments, mixing in between until fully melted.
10 ounce package Ghirardelli white vanilla melting wafers
Using a fork, dip each cake ball into the melted chocolate and coat completely. Gently tap the fork on the edge of the bowl to remove excess chocolate.
Place the remaining melted chocolate into a ziploc bag and cut a small hole in the corner to drizzle over each cake ball.
Place sprinkles onto the cake balls directly after drizzling and then place them back into the fridge for 15 minutes to set.
Red, white, and blue sprinkles
Keep refrigerated until ready to enjoy.
Notes
Storage :
These cake balls can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
For longer storage, you can also freeze them (before adding sprinkles) for up to 1 month. Thaw in the fridge and decorate before serving!
Tips :
Switch out the white chocolate for red candy melts and blue candy melts to give your cake bombs even more festive flair. Dip some in red, others in blue, and drizzle white chocolate on top!
For the smoothest coating, use a fork to dip each patriotic treat into the melted chocolate, tapping gently to remove excess. To avoid chocolate drips, use a toothpick to lift the cake ball off the fork and place it onto the lined baking sheet.
For easy chocolate drizzling, transfer your melted chocolate into a zip-top bag and snip a small hole in one corner. For more control and precision, use a piping bag with a fine round tip!
Swap out the colors and sprinkles to match any holiday: pastel for Easter, green and red for Christmas, or your favorite team colors for game day!
Use a cookie scoop when forming the balls to keep the size consistent.
