- 7 - 8 cups flour
- 6 packets yeast (or 4 1/2 tablespoons)
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 3/4 cups warm water
- 1 1/2 cups butter (3 sticks, melted)
- 2 eggs
- 2 egg yolks
- 2 tsp salt
Streusel Crumb Topping Ingredients
- 1/2 stick butter (4 tablespoons)
- 1 cup flour
- 3/4 cup sugar
Option 1 - Chocolate Filling Ingredients
- 2 sticks butter (melted)
- 1 box instant chocolate pudding
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup cocoa
- 2 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup water
Option 2 - Cinnamon Sugar Filling
- 1 cup sugar
- 3 tbsp cinnamon
- 1/2 sticks butter (melted)
Option 3 - Nutella Filling
- 1 jar Nutella
Streusel Crumb Topping Instructions
In a small bowl melt 1/2 stick of butter (or 4 tablespoons or margarine). Add flour and sugar and mix together until combined. Use your hands to crumble the mixture and set aside for later
Chocolate Filling Instructions
Melt 2 sticks of butter. Add pudding mix, sugar, cocoa, water, and egg. Mix all together with a spoon. Set aside for later!
Cinnamon Sugar Filling Instructions
Mix sugar and cinnamon together. Set aside for later! (you will need 1/2 stick melted butter to lightly brush over the dough for the cinnamon sugar to stick)
Option 3 - Nutella Filling Instructions
Soften Nutella in the microwave for approximately 20 seconds (Wait to do this until right before you use the filling below.)
Place yeast and sugar in a bowl and give it a little shake to combine.
Add warm water to bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let sit for 5 minutes while the yeast is activating.
Melt margarine in microwave.
Prepare eggs by cracking in a small bowl and whisk together (2 eggs and 2 egg yolks).
Once the yeast is activated sprinkle salt over mixture, add melted margarine and stir slightly.
Add beaten eggs and five cups of flour and stir until the flour is all incorporated.
Continue to add one cup of flour at a time, kneading until a smooth dough forms (the recipe calls for 7-8 cups of flour, if you find the dough sticky, add a tablespoon more of flour at a time until a finger inserted into the center of the dough comes out clean)
Place the dough in a plastic garbage bag to rise. Twist and secure so no air gets in (see picture). If you would rather not use a plastic bag, leave the dough in the bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel.
Let rise for 1/2 hour to 45 minutes
Divide dough into 3 equal parts and roll into thin rectangles
For chocolate filling - divide filling evenly amongst the three rolled out doughs. Spread the chocolate evenly with a spatula, leaving a 1/2 inch border on all sides.
For Cinnamon Sugar filling - brush melted margarine over rolled out the dough. Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar mixture evenly and generously
For Nutella filling - spread softened Nutella evenly over dough, leaving 1/2 inch border on all sides
Starting with the longest edge, roll the dough into a long log-like roll. Cut it in half and line next to one another. Pinch the tops together and twist the two braids together (see picture). Pinch the bottoms together. Place in either a well greased loaf pan or a round bundt pan.
Egg wash the top and sprinkle generously with streusel. Let rise for 1/2 hour
Place in oven at 350 degrees for 45 minutes
Serve immediately, later or freeze (if freezing, let cool completely first!)
