Peppermint Oreo Balls

Our no bake Peppermint Oreo Truffles recipe is just as easy as my other Oreo balls and Mint Oreo Truffles, but these chocolate-coated truffle treats are even mintier because they’re made with a double dose of peppermint.

These chocolate peppermint cookie balls have a soft, moist Oreo and cream cheese mixture in the middle surrounded by a hardened chocolate shell; they’re filled with a festive flavor for the holiday season and have a sweet and slightly tangy taste. Just like my Chocolate Peppermint Cheesecake, the crunchy peppermint pieces and creamy filling is the perfect Christmas combination.

When you’re too consumed with holiday cooking to bake homemade chocolate chip cookies, cut-outs, or classic Christmas peanut butter blossoms, you’ll love the ease and convenience of converting Oreo cookies into deliciously decadent desserts!

Substitutions and Additions

  • Candy Melt Colors: You can dip your Oreo peppermint truffles in any colored chocolate coating you wish. Candy melts come in a variety of colors and can be found at most craft stores.
  • Prepare With More Peppermint: Feel free to use peppermint Oreos or another brand of chocolate mint sandwich cookies instead of the regular Oreos. You can also adjust the amount of extract in the mixture to make it more or less minty.
  • Other Oreo Ball Ideas: You can make different types of Oreo balls with almost any flavor of Oreo cookie. For some fun and festive truffle treats, try my Oreo Truffles Ornaments, Birthday Cake Oreo Balls, and surprise inside Oreo Balls.
  • Decorate Your Desserts: Before the chocolate coating begins to set, you can top your mint Oreo balls with a drizzle of chocolate, cookie crumbs, sprinkles, crushed candy, or chopped nuts.

Tips For Making Peppermint Oreo Truffles

  • Make sure the cream cheese is softened to help avoid lumps in the truffle dough. I prefer using full fat cream cheese for this recipe because it gives these treats the most flavor and richness. Reduced fat would still work, but they may not be as rich tasting.
  • If you don’t have a blender or food processor, you can place your Oreo cookies in a Ziploc bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Make sure you crush the entire cookie and do not remove the filling.
  • You can also crush the candy canes with a food processor, or by placing them in a sealable plastic bag and crushing them with a rolling pin.
  • These are best served chilled.

How to Store Peppermint Oreo Truffles

  • To Store: Store any leftover chocolate peppermint truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • To Freeze: You can freeze the uncoated mint Oreo truffles in the freezer in an airtight container, separated by wax paper to avoid sticking to each other, for up to 2 months. Allow the truffles to thaw, then coat and decorate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Oreo truffles need to be refrigerated?

Oreo truffles should be kept in the fridge until you serve them. I think they taste best when cold. However, they can be left at room temperature. According to the FDA, cream cheese can be left out at room temperature for up to 2 hours.

Can I use chocolate chips instead of candy melts to coat my Oreo balls?

Either candy wafer melts or almond bark is the best option to coat Oreo balls because they create a smooth texture. However, if you choose to use chocolate chips, you will need to add 1 tbsp of coconut oil to each 8 oz of chocolate chips you’re melting for a smooth finish.

What is the best way to dip Oreo truffles in melted chocolate?

The best method to coat these truffles in chocolate is to use a dipping spoon or fork and gently tap any excess chocolate on the side of the bowl. I like to use a toothpick to remove the excess melted wafer from the bottom of the spoon or fork and then gently push the ball onto the baking sheet.
