Fresh Fruit Salsa with Homemade Cinnamon Sugar Chips

Chips and salsa is a favorite when it comes to snacks around our house. At any given moment you could peek in our pantry and find a bag of tortilla chips and a jar of salsa. We absolutely love it. But, every now and then the sweet tooth comes knockin’ and the classic chips and salsa just won’t do the trick.

Luckily, I have this recipe for fruit salsa! It’s the sweet sister to classic chips and salsa. Made with fresh fruit and served with cinnamon sugar tortilla chips, this is a fun play on our favorite snack that satisfies the craving for something sweet.

This also makes for a wonderful appetizer to serve at parties or gatherings. It’s an awesome option for baby showers, and since it’s made with fruit you can even swing it for a brunch get together. It’s so versatile, delicious, and so easy to make. You are going to love it!

What is Fruit Salsa?

Fruit salsa is just like a traditional chunky salsa, only instead of being full of yummy veggies with a spicy sauce, this is full of delicious fruit and made with a sweet sauce.

It’s served up with homemade cinnamon sugar chips on the side instead of classic tortilla chips. It’s an insanely tasty, fun, and unique twist on a classic appetizer.

Ingredients

Cinnamon Chips:

  • 6 (6-inch) flour tortillas
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons butter (melted)

Fruit Salsa:

  • 2 ½ tablespoons honey
  • 2 ½ tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 ½ tablespoons strawberry preserves (or seedless raspberry preserves)
  • 16 ounces strawberries (cut into ½-inch pieces)
  • 2 mangos or 2 peeled peaches (cut into ½-inch pieces)
  • 3 kiwi (cut into ½-inch pieces)
  • ½ pint fresh blueberries

Substitutions for Fruit Salsa

Fruit Preserves: As mentioned above you can use either strawberry preserves or seedless raspberry preserves. Also, if you don’t have any preserves on hand, try using the same amount of brown sugar or just simply double the amount of honey. It will still be delicious this way!

Fruit: You can definitely get super creative with the fruit in your salsa. As you saw in the directions above you can use mango or peaches interchangeably. But, it can be made with tons of other fruits as well. Pick your favorites… apples, raspberries, blackberries, nectarines, pineapple, the list goes on!

How to Make Fruit Salsa with Cinnamon Chips

How to Make Cinnamon Chips:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the cinnamon and sugar; set aside.
  3. Place the flour tortillas on a cookie sheet, brush with the melted butter, and sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  4. Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut each tortilla into 6 pieces, slicing it like a pie.
  5. Bake for 10 – 12 minutes. Let cool.

How to Make Fruit Salsa:

Step 1: In a small bowl, combine the honey, lemon juice, and preserves. Set aside.

Step 2: In a large bowl, combine the fruit. Pour the honey mixture/fruit juice over the fruit and gently stir. Chill this until you are ready to serve.

Step 3: Serve the fruit salsa with the homemade cinnamon chips. The sals is best if served within two to three hours of making it.

PRO-TIPS

Tip 1: The cinnamon chips can be made a few days in advance! Just be sure to store them in a cool, dry, airtight container.

Tip 2: When making the cinnamon chips, the cookie sheet can be lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Just be careful about using the pizza cutter or knife on your baking mat!

Tip 3: If your fruit is in season and is already pretty sweet, you might not need to add the entire amounts of sugar. Give the fruit a little taste first,if it’s super sweet I recommend to lessen the amount of sugar a bit.

Tip 4: Learned from experience… you might want to hide your cinnamon chips from your people until you’re ready to serve them! They will likely disappear if you don’t.

How to Store

The beauty of the fruit salsa is that the lemon juice mixed in with the sauce will help to keep the fruit looking nice and fresh for longer! Be sure to store the fruit in an airtight container and keep it nice and cold in the fridge in between servings.

Your cinnamon chips should be stored in a cool dry place. I like to store them in an airtight container but you could also use a Ziploc bag. Don’t forget to hide them somewhere good, or they may very well go missing!

  • When making the cinnamon chips, brush tortillas using a basting brush with melted butter, it makes it super easy. Also, the cookie sheet can be lined with parchment paper or a baking mat. Just be careful about using the pizza cutter or knife on your baking mat.
  • If you do not have any preserves on hand, try using the same amount of brown sugar or just simply double the amount of the honey. It will still be de-lish!
  • And, finally, hide the cinnamon chips from your people until you are ready to use. I had to do this because they were beginning to disappear.
