Ingredients

  • Ice cream cake cones: I recommend using the Keebler brand or another high quality brand. Great value brands tend to be fragile and not as fresh.
  • Whipped white frosting: You can substitute pre-colored frosting for the grass if you prefer. I like the whipped white frosting for the bunny butt because it tends to be the whitest frosting available. If you prefer another color or flavor for your bunnies you can substitute any other frosting.
  • Spring funfetti cake mix, prepared according to box instructions: You can substitute white or yellow cake mix instead.
  • Green food coloring: Liquid coloring is easiest for the coconut but you can make gel coloring work if you stir it enough. Either type will work for the frosting.
  • Sweetened, shredded coconut
  • Chocolate mini eggs: You can use your favorite round candy if you prefer.
  • Candy bunny feet: These can be found around Easter time at most grocery or craft stores in the baking section. At other times of the year they can be ordered online.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Choose Your Candy: You can substitute jelly beans, Easter colored M&Ms, or another round candy instead of using the chocolate mini eggs if you prefer.
  • Green Grass: You can use green sanding sugar, green frosting, or green colored sprinkles instead of shredded coconut to make the green grass.
  • Build Your Bunny: Feel free to create your own custom bunny parts.
    • Bunny Butt: A scoop of ice cream, an oversized marshmallow, or a white donut hole can make a great bunny butt.
    • Bunny Tail: Instead of candy, you can use a marshmallow or chocolate melt to make your bunny tail.
    • Bunny Feet – To make your own bunny feet, use a pink food coloring marker to draw bunny feet on to the flat side of a marshmallow that’s been cut in half.
  • Two 9×13 inch baking pans
  • Aluminum foil
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Shallow dipping bowl
  • Butter knife
  • 1 ½ Tablespoon cookie scoop

How to Make Bunny Butt Cone Cakes

Kids of all ages will have fun eating these fuzzy Bunny Butt Cone Cakes, complete with colorfully cute little tails and paws. This easy recipe simple bakes your cake inside ice cream cones to create a deliciously decorated dessert for Easter or springtime.

  1. Prepare the cake mix according to the instructions on the box.
  2. Pour cake batter into each cone and bake and let cool.
  3. Make the grass using green food coloring and frosting and by adding a few drops of green coloring to the coconut.
  4. Spread the green frosting on top of each cupcake and then dip it into the colored coconut to create a layer of “grass”.
  5. Scoop to scoop out a ball of chilled icing onto the top center of the cone cake to make the bunny “butt”.
  6. Place a chocolate mini egg into the center of the bunny “butt” to create the tail and two matching bunny feet to the base and repeat with each cone cake.

Tips

  • Place the two of the tubs of frosting in the refrigerator to chill before you start baking.
  • I like to use heavy duty foil to cover my pans because it seems sturdier, but the regular kind will work too.
  • I find it easiest to use the tip of a sharp knife to cut little “Xs” into the foil. When you push the ice cream cones in, they will open up the x’s to just the right size, so the cones are supported.
  • You can also use a cupcake tin, but make sure to snuggly secure each cone by wrapping a piece of crumpled foil around the base of each.
  • Do not overfill your cones or you will have an overflowing mess.

Storage Tips

  • To Store: Store your cone cakes, loosely covered, at room temperature for 1-2 days. After that, they can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 more days but the cones will probably get soft.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I store my Bunny Butt Cone Cakes?

These Bunny Butt Cone Cakes are a little tricky to store. If you have poked small holes in them once they come out of the oven the cones should stay crispy for 1-2 days.
You should keep them loosely covered, at room temperature for those 1-2 days. After that, they can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 more days but the cones will probably get soft. I do not recommend freezing these cone cakes.

Can my kids help with these Bunny Butt Cone Cakes?

This recipe is a great one to make as a family! I love to let my kids help with the mixing, the batter, the frosting and the coconut. Kids will have fun dipping the cones with the green frosting in the coconut, a step which is easy and impossible to mess up!
They will also love placing the “tail” and feet on the bunny butt and will be proud to show off their handiwork!

What is the best method for baking cupcakes in an ice cream cone?

There are various methods for baking cupcakes in ice cream cones, including some methods where the cupcakes are baked and then placed in the cones once cooled.
I prefer baking the cupcake directly in the cone for this recipe because it saves on work and it looks better than trying to fit an already baked cupcake into a cone that may not be the same size.

What are the most useful tips about baking a cupcake in an ice cream cone?

The most important part about baking a cupcake in an ice cream cone is making sure that the cone won’t fall over when you put the batter in it or as you’re transferring it to the oven.
I like wrapping a large piece of aluminum foil around the top of a 9×13 inch baking dish and poking holes just big enough for the cones.
You can also use cupcake tins and bunch aluminum foil up around the cone to stabilize it.
Alternatively, you can purchase a disposable 9×13 pan (or two) and cut out holes the size of your cones and then place it upside down on a baking sheet to create a “cone holder” of sorts.
Whatever you do, be sure those cones are secure before you fill and move them!

These adorable Bunny Butt Cone Cakes are the cutest Easter treat you'll ever eat. They're sweet, festive, and surprisingly easy to make!
Prep Time 35 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 55 minutes

Ingredients

  • 24 count package ice cream cake cones
  • 36 ounce (3 12-ounce) tubs whipped white frosting
  • 16.25 ounce box spring funfetti cake mix prepared according to box instructions
  • Green food coloring
  • 1 cup sweetened, shredded coconut
  • 24 chocolate mini eggs
  • 2.82 ounce package candy bunny feet

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and wrap a large piece of aluminum foil over two 9×13 inch baking pans.
  • Place two of the tubs of frosting in the refrigerator to chill.
  • Use a knife to slice 12 x shapes into each piece of aluminum foil, just large enough for the cake cones to be placed inside, standing up. This will create a more stable pan for the cone cakes to bake in.
  • Once you have placed all 24 cones in the aluminum foil covered pans, prepare the cake mix according to the instructions on the box in a medium mixing bowl.
  • Pour cake batter into each of the cones until they are about ¾ full. You don’t want to overfill it or your cupcakes will be lopsided.
  • Bake the pans, one at a time, in the oven for 19-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.
  • Once the cone cakes are finished baking, poke two small holes in the bottom of each cone and then set them aside to cool completely. This should take about 30 minutes to an hour.
  • While the cones are cooling, prepare the remaining tub of frosting by adding green food coloring and stirring until the entire tub is an even, grassy green color.
  • Place the coconut in a shallow bowl and add a few drops of green coloring. Stir until the coloring has been spread throughout the coconut. It may not be an even color but that is ok.
  • Once the cone cakes are cooled, spread the green frosting in a thin layer over the top of each cupcake with a butter knife and then dip it into the colored coconut to create a layer of “grass”.
  • Once each cone cake has a grass layer, remove one tub of the chilled white frosting from the refrigerator and use a 1 ½ Tablespoon cookie scoop to scoop out a ball of icing onto the top center of the cone cake. This is the bunny “butt”.
  • Place a chocolate mini egg into the center of the bunny “butt” to create the tail and two matching bunny feet to the base.
  • Repeat with each cone cake, replacing the frosting in the refrigerator when it starts to get too soft and switching to the chilled tub instead.
  • Once you’ve finished decorating your Bunny Butt Cone Cakes they can be served immediately or stored until you’re ready to serve them.

  1. Cute! But based on the position of the feet, your little bunnies are lying on their backs. Which calls into question, what are the little protuberances that are sticking up? Yikes!! LOL!!!!

  2. Those pictures look so wrong to me. If the bunny toes are pointing up – wouldn’t that be the belly facing up then? So the bunny tail is on the belly and just looks so wrong. Shouldn’t the toes be facing down so it would be the bunny butt and tail on the tops of these?

      1. Ehh…your bunny butt cookies have the bunnies with toes facing down and it looks really cute. These definitely look like bunny bellies. Which you may not want to have at a party where older kids (or adults) may think that the bunny tail is something else entirely…
